What is the cost of HPTuners VS a 35 dollar box?

    • Do you have/can you get a copy of your tune?

      • Yes, Phil said if I bought the program that he'd email the tune to me.

Likely I will have a need for HPTuners again, and who knows whether or not another box will work. You've proven that it does work in your car but do I want to put risk in a box that controls fuel? No. It has me thinking...what if I'm going down the track and at 6500rpm that box fails and fuel cuts off-then what happens, does it go lean? Or if I'm FAR away from home and that box fails, then the tow will cost more than the program. It's peace of mind, I want to know that VATS is gone, and gone completely from my PCM.

          • If you are in a hurry to get the car back on the road, have Phil email you the tune with the VATS change then anyone that has 1998's unlocked can load it.

            • The problem is finding someone that has 98's unlocked...maybe I should try Vector. Besides that I don't think Phil's even going to be around for a few, last I heard he was in Indy and I doubt he has access to his files there. Might just have to wait until he's back in town.

              • I have HPT with 98s unlocked, but Jon has it right now. I'm sure he'd be happy to meet you up on the weekend or something though. Phil may have access to all his stuff he is down there tuning cars so I'm sure he has some of it.

                • That would be awesome. Jon, the Jon with the vette? Also, with HPT do you actually need the file or can you just read the PCM and then edit the file? If you guys have a the connectors to connect right to the PCM I could come to you. Otherwise the car is in non-driving condition.

                  • Not Jon with the vette its Jon with the SOM Trans am but hes never on the site anymore. He has the program and the connector right now. I'll see if he can get in touch with you. I can edit your file as well so if its just shutting off VATS it'll be quick and easy.

                    • THANK YOU Jeff. I knew it'd be a quick fix, I read up on it and apparently it's four steps in with a drop-down menu, only problem I've been having is getting access to the program.

                      • If you have to travel somewhere to get HPTuners, you can pull your PCM and hook it up in another car. That might be the fastest/easiest route.

                        • I just now ordered HPTuners. I should've just ordered it Monday like I was going to instead of waiting for people. If this doesn't work I don't know what I'm going to do. Maybe a new PCM/wiring harness if it doesn't but that will mean money, which I am now a little short on.

                          • Well I just did a ton of reading on the HPTuners forum and it seems pretty promising. Looks like this will be a very useful program. They even had a thread going for improving gas mileage by pseudo lean cruise (lean cruise only in Australian cars because they don't have to conform to EPA) where at part throttle at cruising rpm's the AFR is leaned out to ~15.5:1 to 16:1. They were reporting about 3-4mpg gain.

                            • So HPT is scheduled to be delivered to me on Tuesday. Phil already emailed me my tune, and he said he already changed the vats option to "none"

                              • sounds like you should be up and running soon Vinnie! So the plan is just to put the tune on it that Phil emailed you with vats disabled and cross your fingers?

What else can you do with this program? Will it actually allow you to go in and tune a car yourself or edit the tune you have now?
