Get more stacks than your vehicle has exhaust outlets. Like those big lifted diesels with more than one stack.

Got the trans, shifter, and distributor back in this weekend. Still on the list: clean up and install tcase, fill with fluids, weld an exhaust bracket i had to cut, install driveshafts and it should be back on the road (until the next project ). A very useful tip for installing an SM465... Press the clutch pedal while sliding the input shaft home, or it'll never line up!

After this i plan on doing a fuel filter, new radiator/hoses/coolant, and considering the wrong fluid was in the trans its probably worth a drain/refill on the axles as well. Oh, and dual exhaust.

This was my clever way of suspending the trans so i could reconnect the exhaust (jack/stands would be in the way)

Maybe I missed it, but did you only have to change the fluid in the trans to the proper stuff or did it need a rebuild?

Inspection was fine. Conclusion was the guy had motor oil in the trans instead of gear oil and it wasnt thick enough to prevent the trans from making some pretty significant noises once hot. I managed to find the correct 85w-90 gl-4 gear oil (cant use gl-5) so hopefully this solves the problem. if not then thats just the way it is, i dont need to worry about it.

Excellent. Hopefully putting the right oil in there does the trick.

                That's awesome. Always good when it's a simple(ish) fix.

Agreed. Wish i would have known that before i pulled everything apart but this forced me to fix some leaks and learn what i really have.

Shoulder pressed the tcase back in last night. Just fluids, driveshafts, and welding an exhaust hanger left to go.

Yeah my back is trying to tell me that wasnt such a great idea, but I disagree I thought it was brilliant. Only did it that way because the trans jack couldnt get me the right angle, and the monstrosity of a catalytic converter was also in the way... had me eying the sawsall yet again.

Unless you're planning on doing an A-B comparison like I am, hack that giant cat off. If it's original, those are worth some coin.
