  • So i pulled the 700r4 today.. The transmission has seen better days for sure... Dont know if I have ever seen so much black rtv used on something before. Looks like the pan leaked so the guy used in generously on the pan.. And dipstick tube.. Its a mess. Looks like the torque converter is aftermarket though..

My shift selector shaft on my other trans is busted so I'm going to try and find a new one to swap in and replace the seal while I'm at it. After that ill be ready to swap in and finally take it for a real drive

      • so this morning before work I stopped into a transmission shop to see if they could order me a new shift selector shaft and I brought my old one in for comparison.. they had one laying around and just gave it to me for free! score! so now I am ordering a few more things for the transmission (like a new seal for the shaft, new pan gasket, new filter) and going to hopefully have it put back in this week/end!

        • I love stopping into shops with little parts that I can't find or when shipping is just as much as the part itself. I needed a valve body gasket (I forget why) for my 4l60e so I stopped by a local shop and they gave me a gasket kit for the whole trans...free. "Here you go, just tell your friends about us. Have a nice day!"

              • So this car for the most part is super solid and haven't seen anything that looks too rusty.. but I DID see on the underbody that someone didn't know how to jack a car properly and smashed up some over the underside.. I'll snap a few pics of it later tonight when I get back under there. also I think I know what it isn't rusty.. the whole underbody of the car is coated in oil and grime haha!

                • I just wanted to stop in and throw some random things @ you before I forget to. The first is, in case no one ever told you. Never use silicone on a transmission pan. As far as your 5.3 build goes, with the ls intake you will either need to modify the hose connection on top of the truckwater pump or use an ls style water pump and spacers. Truck accessories are spaced further out than ls. The throttle on an ls throttle body will hit the upper hose spout on the truck water pump. This all comes into play when you are buying alternator brackets and such. All 3 styles are different corvette, truck and ls.

                  • I'm using a truck pump, truck trottle body, and LS1 intake on the 1960 Impala. Just need to slightly adjust the neck.

Oh? The truck TB ,throttle must be higher than an ls. My ls sits @ .33 throttle with the truck manifold ,due to contact. I didnt recieve the truck TB with my engine so I cant try it out.

Thanks haha.. yea I plan on putting my trans back in the right way. I am replacing the gaskets and torquing the pan to spec. the guy before me was just lazy and globbed a bunch on there.

I originally planned on using the 5.3 accessories but have recently decided I'll just replace with fbody ones. I found a guy who is gonna sell me a complete setup for $275 off an lS1 Fbody engine.. I just sold my truck setup for $200 so not too bad.

                              • Ok.. so.. I am probably going to put the trans in tonight.. but have a question..

I now currently have 2 torque converters and was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on which one I should use.. the one that came out of the bad trans (which I don't know any history of this torque converter or if its any good) the stampings on the converter show 4842HS and from what I gather is this is about a 2k stall. so it looks to be a bit of an upgrade over stock.. and the torque converter that was in my old trans is.. well.. a stock truck converter.. which I believe is a stall of 1400.. but I DO know that this converter is ok..

the car is a stock HO 305 and isn't crazy powerful.. so I was thinking that a bit higher of stall might make it a little more fun.. but at the same time not sure if I should risk it considering I don't know the history of it. any way to test the converter while its out of the car? what are everyones thoughts? I don't want to buy a new converter considering this engine/trans combo is only temporary until the LSx/T-56 swap
