Kyle you are halfway right about the thermostat issue. Yes it is true that an enigne (especially a modern day engine) works better with some temperature. There is such a thing as thermal efficiency, but it falls off at both ends. It seems like you have been reading a lot about a 160* stat, yet dont really have any experience running one.

I have had both and looked at logs at both in real world situations. I have done it. For an LT1, a 160* stat is a good mod. It does not mean that the engine is going to run at 160, it runs about 180-195* LT1's get pissed when they get hot and that is the last thing you want one to do is to get hot. There is absolutely no difference in thermal efficiency between an engine running at 190 or 210. Remember Kyle, this is jsut the coolant temp. and a mere 20* difference in water temp (not a lot). I cant measure with a gauge but I would bet money that this will change the combustion temperature and egt's absolutely nothing.

Bottom line is a 160* stat is a good mod. And I am speaking from experience

Good post Ryan. You are spot on, I did quite a bit of research when I owned that car looking into putting a 160 thermostat in. If they run 180-195 with a 160 tstat, what's the point? That car almost never moved off of 180, unless I was at woodward during the dream cruise. But even then I think it only got to just above 200.

Well guess I am calling the cops because neither one of those people is me! ROBBERS!

I just found out the FAST Dual Wideband o2 meter I want will replace the factory o2s and will read a wideband signal to the meter and then will send out a narrowband signal to factory o2 harness. That's sweet.

Are you reading that temperature from the port in the drivers side head (which shows up on the gauge)? It may seem like you were running about 180 due to the stock gauge, but it is horribly inaccurate. 160* on that gauge = about 180-190. 210* on that gauge = at point of being too hot.

I can send you my scans in hptuners if you can open that file, not sure if you have the software or not. My gauge would just move off the 160 and I would be reading usually 192 in Hptuners (FYI: I have a brand new sensor as well). If you had the stock stat it would have been actually running a tad over 200. I hate that gauge in the dash, I just know that if it shows 210 on there that I need to shut the car down lol thats all I use it for.

Wow, I had no clue that the gauges were that far off. I knew the factory tach was pretty much worthless but not the water temp too. Way to go GM.

yeah its wayyyy off. And I actually have a brand new OEM sending unit in it as well. I have had a lot more luck with the stock tach, mine seems to be decently close.

Here is a pic where you can see my coolant temp. This is with a 160* thermostat in 3rd gear doing some "testing" out on oakwood road, doing some shift point work, so the car was up to full temp. The temp gague moved just off 160 or a tad over at this point LOL
