Yep...probably what's left of some of the nylon teeth. They are a 100k tuneup part, like platinum plugs.

That's something I plan to accidentally do at some point.

        Just good insurance anyway.

But think: wouldn't a sick cam lope make it all the more *****in?

All the sound with none of a performance - everything a 305 stands for.

On that note - the stock cam is absolutely worthless - I can imagine that replacing it would improve all aspects of driving the vehicle.

              • I think I still have a zz4 cam around here somewhere if you want a freebie. Not much sound, but I'm sure it would be fun 😀

                • hmm i could use a zz4. considering most stock cams are puny and useless, one would help, not significantly since you cant do a ton for them but if your not spending much on them then its worth it. i have a few cams if you want one. or jims zz4 would work nicely just for an overall bump

                  • Meh. I really dont want to modify this engine. it has good torque the way it is now, I'm not looking to make a tired old 305 want to rev to the moon. If i do anything at to it, its going to be a bolt-on EFI system. Beyond that... i'd rather do a 350/383 swap.

                    • Slowly but surely progressing. This project has been easy work but has taken tenfold the amount of time i originally expected it to. Theres been a considerable amount of time invested in cleaning gasket surfaces, repainting various parts, trying and failing to remove the driver side valve cover, and things like de-gunking the inside of the overflow container. Also needed 3 special tools to do the timing set! I think one more solid afternoon of work ill be able to fire it up. Just want to drive it already!

You couldn't remove the driver side valve cover? At least in the Camaro, that was the easier of the two - in that there is less shit in the way.

I looked to clean the passenger one after making the driver side all shiny, but until the AIR system is gone, there's too much to remove to get to it.

                        • The AC compressor is the major thing in the way. Which i removed (and now reinstalled). But i physically cant remove the cover without destroying it. Its as if someone glued/welded it on. There are some small brackets welded on the top of the valve cover that ran some zip-ties through to give myself a good handle to leverage from... Pulling directly away from the engine with everything i had resulted in nothing more than the suspension decompressing slightly. Sucker is on there! Passenger side came right off. That was the side that was leaking so at least i took care of that.

                          • If I recall, you have the small (depth) compressor. I have the four and a half foot long A6 and I had to just pull the belt off and yank it over as far as it could go.

Wonder if someone used gasket sealer on the cork...my driver side came off like your passenger side, didn't require much force to pop it loose. Pivoting it out as a little bit of a chore, but took all of like 5 minutes.

They are flimsy as hell, so yes, any extra effort could potentially damage them.

                            • Im thinking someone used some kind of sealer when the AC was updated back in 2000. But its not coming off lol.
