  • As long as you have the series 3 carrier you should be good. You'd need the ring and pinion as well as the installation kit.

Cheaper buying a whole rear? Doubt it. I'm 500 into my 9 bolt with it still not in the car and the parts on the
shelf. Perhaps if you want a stock rear with drums and a million rusty miles.

Don't mess with 30 year old junk. Get the good stuff. Do it right the first time and don't have any regrets.

    • new ring/pinion and install kit should be here tomorrow! hoping to have the rear disassembled today or tomorrow and can hopefully have it back together by the weekend! I think I will probably just go ahead and replace the axle bearings/seals while I'm at it.

      • Get a slide hammer and the bearing/seal attachment if you don't have one already. Makes it so much easier.

              • so its starting to look more and more like I won't be going to the M&G this year

I have so much stuff going on and so little time to do anything.. I went to pull the wheels off the car.. beside missing lugnuts from multiple wheels.. one of the lugs on the passenger side rear is completely stripped.. ugh.. so I have still yet to really do anything to the rear

dude you have plenty of time, if you wanted. Stripped lug nuts no problem takes 5 minutes missing ones no problem they are plentiful. Rear end is a weekend job at most since you are rebuilding yours. Dont rule something out. I have no trans clutch or anything in my car and I know shes not out!

I haven't counted it out yet.. but like I said.. starting to look more and more like its going to not happen. the difference between your car and mine is that you have had it on the road and driving it, you have taken care of small issues that have come up.. the gap is closing for me to be able to put miles on the car so that I can work out kinks before the show and won't be worried about driving it that whole way there. yes there is time between now and the M&G, but I am working on this car by myself in my spare time when not at work or working on my house (which in all reality is more important than a project car)

I have limited space and tools to work on the garage.. so something as silly as a stripped bolt does put a damper on things.. my brother has any tool I could think of.. but lives across town and he works crazy hours.. not making excuses.. just being realistic

now with all that being said.. I actually plan on working on the car tonight when I get home from work

                        • So I have been thinking over the past week about the plan for this car.. and I have been really torn with it.. part of me just wants to slap it together and get it on the road and the other (more logical) side of me wants to get things done right.. and I know there could be a happy medium between the two of them.. but ultimately I decided that it is more important to me to do things and take my time with them. I was planning on getting the car together for the meet and greet.. but it just makes so much more sense to just keep chugging along on the car and bring it out next year..

I could slap the rear end back together and try to get miles on the car asap to get it up to the M&G.. but I know I wouldn't be happy with that.. my plan originally was to pull the rear end out.. strip it completely.. clean it all up and paint it, etc.. replace rear suspension parts that are worn out while I'm back there and so on.. I know this car isn't progressing as quickly as I (and other people on the site) would like it to.. but I bought it as a project.. and there is no reason to rush or half-ass anything.

So currently I have STILL yet to pull the rear.. but it is ready to come out.. just need to do it.. I unhooked brake lines and its ready to be unbolted..

After the rear end has been completely gone through I was planning on replacing worn out suspension pieces.. what all should be replaced? I imaging the list should consist of shocks, sway bar bushings, LCA bushings, do I need new springs? any recommendations on replacement parts (especially stuff that isn't going to cost an arm/leg, car isn't going to be a super high performance machine.. mostly a weekend cruiser)

                          • I agree with your philosophy. Do it right the first time. I bought my iroc and it was fugly with cragars. I drove it for a month and then it sat for about a year until I was satisfied.

Replace all the rubber. Many parts came with new bushings, but the remainder is from energy suspension. I dig their stuff.

Don't overlook the torque arm bushing.

                            • Ok guys, update time..

Things have been crazy around my house lately, with refinishing floors, landscaping, family member passing away, family vactaions, etc.. things being done to the T/A have been.. well non existent.. :\

So I have been struggling with this rear end, one thing after another kept coming up with why I couldn't go further with it.. and kept running into the issue of the fact that my rear end is running 26 spline axels.. that was the biggest problem I was having.. basically the following would happen.. 1) I would find a posi unit that would work perfect for the 26 splines, but they were either WAY too expensive for a used unit, or they were the junky gov lock posi. 2) found killer deals on 28 spline units, but that would mean I would have to upgrade/replace the axels which ends up being more expensive than buying a brand new posi unit. 3) finding complete rear ends, that would bolt in but having to take someone elses word on if they were good/setup properly and paying as much as a posi unit.. so there were a lot of other issues too that kept coming up with trying to find the best/most cost affective solution with this rear end.. and finally I came across a deal and just went for it.

So I came across a brand new auburn (Aftermarket) HP series posi for $300 shipped on ebay, they normally go somewhere in the $400-$500 range.. I know the auburn posi units are not the best, but for a car that will probably only be running this rear end for a few years (and will not be abused either), I figured it was a decent route to go. i ordered it and should be delivered by the end of the week.

So the plan now goes like this (Hopefully I can get this done next week)

                              1) pull the rear end out (almost fully unbolted right now, just needs shocks unbolted and LCA's unbolted and it'll drop.
                              2) completely disassemble the rear and clean/degrease/prep/paint the rear end so it doesn't look like garbage anymore.
                              3) Install/Setup new gears/posi unit
                              4) Clean and reinstall axels (while replacing seals and bearings)
                              5) Clean/degrease/prep/paint LCA's, Sway Bar, Differential Cover, Calipers, and Mounting brackets so they look nice and clean
                              6) Replace worn out bushings and shocks
                              7) Reassemble everything and Reinstall
