So as ive been in the process of replacing the valve seals, and while I have everything this far apart I've been trying to resist the temptation to stab a cam in this gutless turd.

It looks like it can be done for about $150, but the whole tappet lifter break-in procedure paired with all the variables of a new EFI trying to learn at the same time kinda scares me. Anyone recommend a good gen 1 hydro/tappet lifter?

Roller cams are nice, but thats more than im willing to invest in this mediocre steed.

Yeah, that's probably true - there might be little to no benefit, even with heads. All the reviews for lifters with the bars seemed to not be that great either, oddly. But it could just be the few I found, as I have to imagine there are far more than what the results ended up with.

I run high-zinc Brad Penn oil anyway, so it certainly isn't the end of the world staying with a flat tappet, and it's definitely cheaper. Who knows, though.

Kyle, yes its a summit cam that is essentially a regrind of an Edelbrock performer towing grind.

Yesterday I got the cam out and 13 of the 16 valve seals replaced. I'm going to have to fabricate a lower profile valve spring tool to get the last three seals. (brake booster is in the way). Thought I was going to have to cut the center bar of the core support to get the cam out but i managed to muscle it out of the way enough to spare it.

Maybe? Thats probably just about the amount of room I have there but I'm also having a hard time picturing how that unit works. what does it hook to and how do you access the locks?
