These wheels have machined areas where the spokes meets the lip. I would have kept these wheels if they weren't thereOriginally posted by DETROITMUSCLE View Postthey look pretty darn good, I think the only thing I don't like is how you continued the black onto the lip, should have stopped at the lip IMO.

We only painted the black where there was paint originally, I know what you mean but it wouldnt have looked right because then it would not have been polished and would have looked wrong with the black. The wheels are still a work in progress, going to start cleaning them up and polishing soon.Originally posted by DETROITMUSCLE View Postthey look pretty darn good, I think the only thing I don't like is how you continued the black onto the lip, should have stopped at the lip IMO.

I am glad you didnt want to keep them! I am starting to think they are going to come out great... Hopefully tires can be mounted next week if I pick out two rear tires...Originally posted by hoogiesngrinderz View PostThese wheels have machined areas where the spokes meets the lip. No I am good, we will use them when we actually paint the car. The wheels took 2-3 hours each to tape off, 2 minutes each to prime, 2 minutes to paint each and 30 minutes in between to clean the gun,Originally posted by bri2203 View PostThose look great!
Your birthday is coming up do I need to buy you a respirator?
so for the 20 minutes or less where paint was actually being done, we were good. Just a little black up the nose,
But after doing this little project I am more comfortable with the idea of actually painting this thing. Cant wait till we can spray some primer and see how its going to end up.

Good, those paint fumes are very dangerous. I don't know of any painters who lived to be old. And you a dog that you have to raise, You can't be living on the wild side anymoreOriginally posted by Darren View PostNo I am good, we will use them when we actually paint the car. If your a painter by trade you must use an OSHA approved spray gun and if you are not in a filtered booth I think your only suposed to spray a max of 4 oz of liquid.
Its nothing super difficult if you are paining a solid color, like everyone said it is all in the preperation. I would consider spraying it in single stage opposed to base coat/clear coat.

whats a single stage? Still a paint newbie here so any explanation and advice is always welcomed...
Also does anyone have any good tips, technique for polishing these wheels? I have been at one for about an hour now and still not getting the results that I was hoping for. I am using Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish with the while applicator pads and also a polishing pad that connects to a drill.... Applying polish (some areas feel like I am scrubbing) and then wiping off.
Any other products I should be using? Help me get these wheels to a mirror finish!sigpic

To get back to a high luster finish you will need a high speed buffer and compund

Not coming out too bad but I'm on my way to get 1500 and 2000 grit sand paper to wet sand these. I want a better finish!

Single stage- Is a one step process, You spray it on and what you see is what you get.
Two stage- Is a two step process, You spray on the color(base) and it is very dull, then you spray on the Clear(usually gloss) then you see the true color of how it will look.
If you car was metallic I would never consider single stage. But usualy most pleople find single stage to be easier to paint and much cheaper.
As for your wheels, they looked pretty good the other day. I have yet to see polished aluminum that could be mistaken for chrome. Chrome looks better, is less maintance but chrome will corrode and peal after a few years.
What is your polishing process? After you sand them with 2000 grit, I would use rubbing compound on them, followed by you mag/aluminum specific polish. I have heard great things about simichrome polish.

Darren youre going to quickly hit a point of "diminishing returns" with polishing aluminum. And if you do succeed in making them really bling, it will be that much sooner before youre on your knees polishing them again. Just my .02 i think they look good i would be happy with them as they are.-Joel

Ah makes sense, I'll have to give it some thought. Although I think I'm buying Jon's paint supplies since he's changing colors and he bought exactly what I was going to but I will give both methods a thought.Originally posted by bri2203 View PostSingle stage- Is a one step process, You spray it on and what you see is what you get.

As for the wheels he pictures I'm about to post was wet sanded with 1000 then 1500 then 2000 and then a lot of polishing. I'm happy with this result so far. I'd say these ones are 90% done... Let me know what you think.
True story! I think I'm about done with two wheels. Pictures below.Originally posted by JoeliusZ28 View PostDarren youre going to quickly hit a point of "diminishing returns" with polishing aluminum. Im excited too, I hope they look good on the car with the white red theme. I'm pondering a pin stripe of some sort on the wheels. Hoping michaels offer of a photoshop is still good!Originally posted by nascarnate326 View PostLooks awesome, I love black insides. Makes me excited to get mine finished.sigpic
