  • [Project] Smans 6.0 build up!

Picked up a low miles lq4 today, so far just have the intake off. But I pulled a valve cover and man does it look clean, like brand new, theres marks from a paint marker on the inside of the valve cover, on all the springs, and the inside of the head, looks promising!

Will be running stock bottom end.

I want to use the 317s as I can get them milled for nothing, literally. My question is how much to mill these guys?

Stock for stock, they flow the same numbers as 243/799 castings, or so im told, but with bigger chambers. The 317s have 72cc chambers, where the 243/799s have 64cc chambers. Obviously I want to get them as close to 64 as possible, but thats just not happening. If I use the math that .007 milled is 1cc, then to get to 64cc id have to mill .050+, just not possible.

But if I mill to much im going to kill my valve clearance.

Trying to get this figured out asap, id like to get the heads to the shop tomorrow if I can.

ALSO, anyone have an used ls cam laying around, looking for bigger than TR224.

Was bored at work, cant wait to get home and rip the heads off and get them ready.

I know I can go .030 no problem. But there are people saying you can take up to .060 off before affecting the way everything lines up, but what kinda of PTV am I looking at, how big of a cam could I go with at that point?

The only way to find out really would be to check the clearance with some putty.

            Whats the cam specs?

I could use my tr224, but I kinda want to go bigger. But only if someone has something laying around I guess, dont really want to drop the coin on a new one.

Being that it's a 6L I think you should go bigger than the 224...but then again do you drive it EVERY day during the summer?

                        Update!

Well this just took an interesting turn.....

Got over there immediately got to pulling the heads, these are going to the machine shop monday.

While we were standing around talking (heads have been off probably 5 minutes now) I glanced down and was imediatly filled with excitement, lets just say a surface previously believed to be "dished" is "flat"

We literally didnt even think about it while pulling them, cant believe I didnt notice, lol.

So my lq4 is actually an lq9! Seller didnt know what he had, worked out good for me.

Mileage on the motor has got to be EXTREMELY low, as the seller claimed, I can dang near see my face in the pistons, and theres not really any marks on the cam from where the lifers were riding. Ive had quite a few motors apart over the years and NEVER have I ever seen one even half this clean on the inside. It honestly looks like whatever this motor came in, got in an accident pulling off the dealer lot the day it was sold and that was the end of it, lol.

Got the motor down to the short block, cam removed, awaiting the TR224 from the 5.3.

Also got the car in the air, drive shaft, battery, coolant overflow all removed, coolant drained, misc electronics and cables disconnected.

Plan for tomorrow is to prep and paint the shortblock, finish removing the engine and trans and get the 6-oh put in the k-member with the basic accessories on it and a 4l60e hanging off the back. Ambitious goals for sure, we shall see how it goes.

                        Pictures in the morning!

congrats spencer.. that is awesome.. i would probably just leave those heads alone or just get them milled very slightly.. your going to have a full point more compression with the 9 compared to the 4
