New AC Delco cable (used 1 day shipping - Amazon Prime) was just over $43.
I don't think the problem is that the travel is restricted. The cable moves just fine. I verified the problem with one person shifting in the car and one person under the car. It's almost as if the effort to push the transmission lever into park is too high. Like I said, rather than pushing the lever into the proper position, the cable bends upward. If I pull on the cable to straighten it, it pushes the lever into place.

    • I have my old cable here on my computer desk. I was able to push a 21" CRT monitor (about 50 lbs) across the floor with the cable, no flexing or bending

Check under the boot and see if the plastic sleeve is cracked

        • That sucks Can you feel a rut with your fingernail? I'm no expert but those look like they could be mostly if not completely rubbed out.

yeah, I kind of can. I have a pretty good idea who's responsible, though. The guy with the Fairlane was two spots over from me. When I showed up last night he had some kind of wooden contraption set up that wasn't there Saturday. I think he caught my door with a 2x4. Honestly, if he pays for the repair, I really don't care. Just another part of a bad day yesterday.

lol yeah I was there yesterday and got a better look at it and figured out what it was haha

So yesterday, a friend from work and I spent a good portion of the day installing the headers. Went from the top, using the motor mount disconnect, tilt the engine method. Time consuming, but not too terribly painful. So now they're in, I still have to go through and tighten a few bolts here and there, but they're in. Now I can really get cranking.

I also figured out the shift cable problem I was having:

Looks like I'm gonna need to buy a shift cable. Had I understood the construction of it, I would've been a bit more careful with it with the motor out. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20

                  • Called it!

Amazon has them, got mine in one day (Prime + $3.99 1 day option)

You will need to unbolt the shifter from the trans tunnel to install it. Careful when you're in there, mine had an egde that was incredibly sharp and opened up my thumb pretty good.

                    • Why didn't you do the headers while the engine was out?

I think he kept them out to coat them

                          • Ah makes a little more sense now. Lol. Guessing you'll wait until they're done next time though. Installing headers even with a lift can be a PITA! I hate headers...

                            • like I said, truth be told, it wasn't that bad. the worst problem was that one of the motor mounts kept binding up when we would try to lower it back to place. It just took us a long time to find where to pry on it to get to fit back in right.

                              • hoogiesngrinderz, does the new shifter cable need to go in the top, or the bottom? I went from the bottom and got it mostly in place, but now I can't get that grommet into the hole properly. I didn't remove the shifter assembly either, because I couldn't get the console out because the parking brake lever won't go high enough.
