That's the problem I ran into, I couldn't get the grommet to set without the possibility of messing it up. I was able to get the handle up just high enough to get the console off but you might have to disconnect the cables from the rear calipers.

There's a way to release the ratchet mechanism that allows the handle to swing all the way up effortlessly. It's hard to figure out with the console still on especially if you've never done it before.

Yup, but it is a real PITA. Easiest to unhook the cable end on the calipers than it is to fiddle with the cable that runs into the trans tunnel.Originally posted by birdie2000 View PostThere's a way to release the ratchet mechanism that allows the handle to swing all the way up effortlessly. I think I'm just going to fight with the grommet with a screwdriver to try to get it seated. The old one was torn when it was installed, so I'm not really worried about it.

Had a reasonably productive day today. Spent the day getting things buttoned up. Got the interior back together and some other stuff. The biggest headache came when I had to remove the passenger-side header because the cap I had made for the EGR fitting wouldn't fit. So we cut it off and welded it:

Other than that, just a lot of little stuff. BUT, another couple days of good work and this thing should get fired up.
One question, though: I tried getting that grommet seated, but it wasn't really working well. This won't bother at all, will it? (kinda hard to see, it's not properly seated from about 7:00 to 10:00)

So I'm still having shift cable problems. I bought the cable that hoogiesngrinderz recommended. I installed it, but it still isn't shifting properly. When I shift the lever into park, the lever on the transmission will not go into the park position.
I have triple- and quadruple-checked the linkage. The linkage is correct.
Any ideas as to what else could cause this?Last edited by alone_and_insane; January 20th, 2014, 02:19 PM.

I just went under the car and watched while somebody sat in the car and moved the lever from P-1-P. It seemed like half of the time, the gear lever on the trans didn't move with the shifter. It would shift out of park, then wouldn't move from reverse to [D], then wouldn't move from D to 2, stuff like that. It was equally screwy going from 1 back up to Park, with it ultimately failing to shift into park. Could it be possible this would be caused by the cable being the wrong length? Might have Amazon shipped me the wrong one?

Well after about an hour of freaking out, I did some more research and figured out that I needed to adjust the cable length, like this guy did:

I didn't know that clip was there to adjust the cable itself. Now I know. Carry on

Sometimes that adjuster is a PITA.

Almost there!

Got (I believe) the rest of the wiring taken care of yesterday, and installed the fans/radiator/AC condenser. One of the smaller hoses that goes from the radiator to the water pump disappeared somehow, so I'm gonna have to replace that and add coolant before starting it up. Also, I didn't add ATF to the torque converter prior to installing it. Should I add extra ATF for the trans to pump into the converter? Is there anything particular I need to do for this?
I also have a B&M Trans cooler that I plan to install. Here is how I intend to mount it:

Sounds good man - so once you adjusted the length all is good with the linkage?- Brian Meissen

Anybody have an answer for my question about adding ATF for the converter?
