  • the ones Jim posted look to be Mac or Kooks like design, possibly a MLS design? I couldn't find a Fel pro that looked like what Jim posted. What makes these so much better than the others? I can't see how they would seal any better, and installation can't be any different.

Those are "Exhaust Manifold gaskets" and not "Header gaskets"

Don't know what others' opinions are but I personally used the Copper Spray-a-Gasket on both sides of my felpro gaskets too.

        • I learned it the hard way too when I did my LT1 build. Exhaust manifolds use the outer bolt and don't use the inner bolt so there's no hole for it. I think I ended up going to O'Reilly, Autozone, or a local performance parts shop and finding SBC header gaskets that worked.

          • I ordered MR Gasket from Jegs that have the hole in the correct place.

If this solves my issues I would be so damn happy. It sucks when you hear a tick and think lifter/rocker adjustment but after 4 times doing that....I just cant believe that its the adjustment anymore. Its just not that hard to adjust them. Has to be the gaskets....I hope.

            • Hope that solves all the issues for ya, Nate. I think it just reinforces if you mod it then it seems easier to find issues of it not running right.

              • My motor has been really good so far. Just seems like dealing with incorrect parts, 17 year old parts, or human error spoils it.

Glad I did it my self but damn would it be nice to just write a check and have it done. Or buy a 5th gen/Mustang and leave it alone.

                • Ha this probably is your problem. Exhaust leak can sound like a tick but generally a flutter.

                    • Nate, if you still have this issue saturday i can swing by your house on my way east and take a peak and see if it sounds like exhaust leak or is in fact in the rockers. i had lots of issues with mine in my old 383 always ticking. between header gasket leaks or the rockers i dont think i ever got it quiet..

FWIW - not sure if you changed the rocker arms to different ones but sometimes they just end up being louder then before. nothing you can do about it but drive.

Werd, sometimes I wish I would have left Red Alert alone as the v6 because I really enjoyed driving it almost every day during the spring through fall. Now that it's so modded it's a garage queen and only gets driven to shows and rarely to work.

                          Those aren't Fel-Pro 1406's, Looks more like MS95585's.

                          Jim posted 1406's.

Go to the parts store and ask for exhuast manifold gaskets for a 96 chevy 1500 with a 5.7 and you'll get 1406's

                          • Got the gaskets in and I have the drivers side in and all bolts in with no issues. Going to take this plate off the back of the drivers head, its loose and appears to not be doing anything.

                            • Got both header gaskets in and all bolts nice and tight. No leaks now however the tick is still there.

Went through and tightened any rocker that had a turnable push rod and it got better. Going to tighten things again in the morning on the other side.

Now I know it's the rockers. New lifters, and new header gaskets.
