thanks guys! I think if the rear end is bad in my car that I will either try and fix (depending on how severe it is) or just swap for a later year 3rd gen rear.. retaining the ability to use the stock wheels is something that I would like to have considering this is kind of a unique car. I'll keep everyone updated!

    Thank you for clarifying that!

Just to clarify, 99 and up came with the Torsen style differential if it was a G80 or Y87 car. 98 still had the cone style Auburn. They are 28 spline vs the 26 spline that came in the older third gens. Late 1989 and all 90-92 rears got the 28 spline axles.

Darren is right! You can't run thirdgen wheels.

Well I guess you could if you really wanted to but we would all judge you.

My understanding is the '98 and newer units have the much stronger Torsen style differential, as well as the stronger 28 spline axles. Between these stronger components, 3.42 gears, and discs, the ONLY draw back (if you consider it one) is the extra axle assembly width.

I have a LS (4th gen) rear in mine. Pros- bolt in easy, better brakes, lots of them around Cons- cant run your thirdgen wheels.

I put mine in last year but I am also running 4th gen wheels

still haven't had a chance to pull the cover yet.. but was wondering your guys thoughts on swapping in a 4th gen rear end? found a posi unit with 3.42 gears with disc brakes for sale.. I know its wider than a 3rd gen rear.. but wasn't sure any other pros/cons of the swap.

    Good News:
Transmission swap was a success.. No leaks.. Goes into gears.. Engine now has load on it in forward/reverse gears.. Seems to be working as expected!

    Bad News:
The rear end of the car seems like something is totally jacked up.. Making all sorts of horrible noises.. Fearing the worst.. I think the rear end is blown... I haven't taken the rear cover off or anything so not sure what's going on back there yet..

thanks! nah you wouldn't be getting in the way.. the thing that is the most annoying for me is constantly having to crawl out from under the car and adjust the jack and get tools, etc and the crawl back under.. I think the other thing that was frustrating yesterday was that it got like super humid and everything in my garage had moisture on it which was pissing me off haha.
