  • Another event, another part broken. This time it was the passenger front fender so it's not too bad. New suspension has not shipped yet and the car did not like the bumps. Very loose on exit and would rotate any time it hit a bump.

Also a very interesting G-G plot and something I have never seen before. There was exactly zero braking done in a straight line anywhere on course, all of it was trail braking.

    • Drivers side mirror glass fell off and shattered mid run this past weekend.

Got the Penskes in today. Had to pick up some shock spacers for the front upper mount and will mill them down at work tomorrow. Initial estimate is ~6lbs lighter per corner in the front than the existing setup.

      • My body is picking the worst time to let me down. Been sick the last couple of days likely due to pushing myself too hard. I still managed to install things on the left side of the car. There is less droop travel front and rear, but it shouldn't really be needed and will allow the car to handle bumps better (more bump travel). The rear Koni 3rd gen shock is actually lighter than the Penske by 0.8lb. I imagine most of that difference is due to the remote reservoir. On the plus side, almost all of the Penske mass is unsprung as they are mounted inverted and the canisters are strapped to the bottom of the Watts link which is the best location possible. Adjustments are incredibly easy with the knob on the canister as well as the eyelet on the bottom of the shock body both being easily accessible when the car is on the ground.

        • New dampers are in. Total loss of 7.6lbs in the front and a gain of 1.6lbs in the rear. Large decrease in unsprung mass as the shock bodies are mounted to the chassis instead of the control arm. I also removed all of the preload from the front bar while I was in there.

          • New shocks are like driving a brand new car. Went up 50% for the front spring rate and 37.5% in the rear to 1200/550. Hit a nasty railroad crossing at 60 that I didn't have time to slow down for and prepared for the worst, but it went over it like there was nothing there. Unfortunately, I broke the rear again too.

Car ran the fastest raw time on the left side of the course on Saturday but it broke the next run. The car was quick enough to win the whole thing without even running Sunday if it had stayed together. First four cars in the class were separated by only 0.109s. Only got the morning runs on video where I demolished 9 cones on the first two runs. Hopped in a friends 84 911 to make fun runs to finish out the weekend and nearly spun it on the first slalom cone. If you aren't on the gas, it's trying to spin.

            • Well the Auburn is shit. Proof the diff is what blew up and took out the ring gear last time. Ring/pinion have no damage this time around but it shredded some teeth in the Auburn. Time for a TrueTrac

              • Made some purchases to get ready for the big show in Lincoln, less than a month away already. Time really flew this year. As part of that, I'm going to put together an updated build list for what is in the car now. Bold items are new as of this update. The car is bad nasty fast and has a legitimate shot at the national championship if it stays together and I keep my head out of my ass.

                Engine:
                Stock 98 LS1 longblock (157k miles)
QTP longtube headers w/Magnaflow cats and single bullet dumped before the axle
                LS6 intake manifold, MTI lid
ATI 10% underdrive pulley and Katech tensioner
Quartermaster Optimum RR 7.25" twin disk clutch
                Poly engine and trans mounts
Dyno tune (done before the clutch, pulley and catback changes, needs to be redone)

                Front Suspension:
Penske 7500 double adjustable shocks with Afco mounts and 1200lb springs
35mm hollow Strano sway bar with Blainefab reinforcement brackets
Global West upper control arms with delrin bushings, modified for more bump travel by Blainefab
Stock lower arms with stock caster bushing and poly camber bushing
                Delrin steering rack bushing
SKF X-Tracker Corvette front hubs with aluminum adapters
Stock calipers and rotors with Hawk DTC-30 pads

                Rear suspension:
Penske 8300 double adjustable shocks with remote canisters and 550lb springs
                22mm Strano adjustable sway bar
                UBE decoupled torque arm
                Fays2 Watts link
                J&M aluminum lower control arms
                Eaton Truetrac
Solid pinion spacer, Mac girdle cover and studded carrier bolts
Stock 94 calipers and rotors with Bendix TitaniuMetallic II pads (reaaaaaally cheap)

                Body/Other:
Battery Tender BL14A240C in stock location (1.76lbs)
                Emptied washer fluid reservoir
GP Race 330mm steering wheel with Momo adapter
Kirkey driver and passenger seats on stock manual rails
Factory Hurst shifter with short stick
No radio/AC (radio wiring is still there per rules)
                Blainefab 10" tall rear spoiler
SJM Manufacturing brake bias kit with Wilwood proportioning valve
MWC subframe connectors (do NOT recommend)

                Wheels/Tires:
17x11 CCW Classics, 7.75in backspace. Requires 1/8in spacer in the front, none in the rear
Brand new set of Hoosier A7 315/35ZR17 tires. Will be scrubbed in at the Lincoln practice course

                • What don't you like about the MWC chassis bars? I've had a set two years and never got around to installing them but have been meaning to.

They fit like shit. I had to beat the hell out of the floor pan and add some extra steel spacers to one end to make them work.

Live timing and scoring will be at http://sololive.scca.com/. Running 18 ESP on Thursday and Friday next week, last heat each day. Ustream can also be found at the links below if the work, they don't have a history of being reliable at Pros and Tours. Nationals is usually better though

The T2R I bought used ended up having a cracked case so I put a TrueTrac in instead. First concrete event on it was this past weekend and while it was only 1 run due to rain, I really liked it. More neutral handling balance and it only spun up the right rear in one corner. Not quite as good as the T2R of old (heard the T2R locks up more gradually and you can drive it full potato as a result) but it will certainly do the trick.

                        • Scrubbed in the new tires and the car is a ****ing rock star. Puts power down as long as you roll into it, the rear comes around if you just squeeze the brakes entering a corner, and it's just got grip for days. It's really just awesome to drive. It's not the fastest car here by a wide margin, but it's good enough to play at the top.

                            • Somehow I had the most satisfying and most frustrating day at the same time. After first runs my raw time was .3 out of the lead after fighting the car all season. Unfortunately my lack of seat time and familiarity of the car showed as I once again coned both of my first two runs and relied on a shit 3rd to get a clean one.
First clip is the first which was my fast raw time and clearly shows how much was left on the table. Second is the run that stood including the car getting stupid loose at the finish and forcing a lift. Lastly was the slalom that would have moved me from 8th to 3rd by itself with some bonus dorifto footage.
Unfortunately the weather looks like it will remove any chance of me improving due to a lack of wet tires. I've managed to beg and borrow a mismatched set of Bridgestones and Rivals, but this looks to be the end of my trophy hopes. Really disappointing after a very tough season of development. The car is working perfectly now, I just need to learn to drive it.
