yeah, it's like that "Magic Dick 4" cam, seemed there was a while there that companies kept pushing the envelope as much as they could as far as height and duration of cams, made for some piss poor quality idle, a lot of surge under part throttle....oh but they sound cool at idle, that's all that really matters anyways!

I had this happen to me before as well, those needle bearings make a total mess and get everywhere. If you want to do it right then get the pan off and clean everything they will surly be in the oil and everywhere else. Typically stock rockers work fine but at minimum I'd buy the comp trunion upgrade and do that or you could run a set from Harlan, comp, ect.

If the needles fell out - order a trunion kit and reuse what you have.

While you have it apart - would replace or at least test all the springs.

what's the cheapest way to go? i'll drop the motor, replace the head gaskets and bolts (heads are almost off). i'll take the oil pan off and clean everything out as best as i can. how do i test the springs? tje retainer on the spring with the bad rocker is chipped/dented a bit. can i just buy one replacement retainer?

how old are the springs? aftermarket springs like these are recommended to be replaced every 10-15K depending on the cam anyways. I would have them tested, possibly by a machine shop I don't know exactly how to go about that.

To test them you need a spring tester - might just be best to order some new springs (Lunati, Patriot, PRC) and go from there. No reason not to if you have it tore down that far.

Also, 853 heads are not 5.3 heads..... 853's are stock LS1 heads like 241's. 5.3 heads are 862 and 706. The more recent 5.3 HO, aluminum 5.3's, and LS4 have 243 heads.
