  • Darren, I have a few thoughts...

    1) Killer bracket! That piece looks great!

    2) Did it solve your throttle tension issue? If so, and it's worth saving....

    3) In the first picture, it looks like the bracket is anchored at the carb between two nuts. Is it possible to remove the first set of nuts? So the stack-up would be carb flange, linkage bracket, then nuts? That would drop the bracket down the thickness of one nut.

    4) It looks like you are hitting on the throttle springs, and the sliding bracket for the cable?

Can you drill two new holes in the front slide, and move those springs down (see photo below)? You might want new, longer springs, rather than stretching those, to keep the throttle tension low.

Lastly, can the adjustable bracket at the back for the cable be adjusted rearward? There seems to be plenty of slot for it. Might require a different cable at that point.

      Thanks!

Yes this bracket solved my gas peddle issue and the car idles great (was another issue I was having with the springs not having enough tension the other way) The peddle feels great and idles better. I really do want to try and use this.

      1. Yes the bracket is sweet, thanks to BigJon for finding this one a much cheaper version then the trickdflow or anything else out there.

      2. Yes solved all of the issues with the peddle and idle

      3. Yes the nuts where there in the first picture. In the last picture they are actually removed and the bracket is as low as it could go. The spacers where there for the old bracket and I just wanted to see how it fit.

      4. Yes it is hitting the springs and then where the throttle cable connects. I could move the cable back it would require another cable (this was one I had to modify that I had at the house already and thats where it fit the best. But I could get a longer one and move it back that is a option for that problem. I didn't do it solely cause I didn't know how to fix the spring side.

Can you explain how you would move the springs lower? I dont really follow what you are saying. I could space the bracket itself on a downward angle and have the springs go down away from the carb on a angle. Is that what your kinda saying? Might make the clearance I need to get the drop base in there?

Additionally I did try to run the bracket upside down, wouldnt work. I can space the back away but I am sure the base might hit the cable tho now that I think about it... As the cable goes under the base to get to the carb.

      I did find this filter:

      http://www.summitracing.com/parts/knn-e-3740

and I could use my K&N open element top with a regular base... It would be tight with the hood, and actually the hood much close down on the top of the filter, but it would latch. I think...

or try to modify the bracket by spacing?

exactly and thats another issue I will be addressing as my checklist grows. I can barely get the car up and down my own driveway now, and it was chore before now its a pain in the ass!

Yes, you've got it. If you look at the photo I posted, there's a little yellow arrow pointing to a new spot to drill a new holes (one on either side) for the springs, that would allow them to run at an angle, hopefully under the air cleaner.

Sounds like you've already tried most everything that I can think of at the moment.

                      • Well major progress tonight. In short I went back to a stock throttle cable. Thanks Brian. Also should have a new base with a smaller drop and a new filter coming soon.

Kinda what hat your talking about Fred. The drop base o have is 2.5 going to go to a 1.25 and still be able to run a 2.5 filter. I was running a 3 inch filter. So shouldn't make much difference and the new gas peddle feel is well worth it.

Um yeah, lol. I was told to buy a new hood and leave it black. I won't even do that. So cut a hole....

                          • I may have missed something, but was the throttle cable not stock? Why was it changed out originally?

No it wasn't. A stock cable did not work with the previous bracket. A stock bracket can not be used either.

Ok so have found the solution! Stock throttle cable (from an 85) and a new drop base air cleaner. Gas peddle is perfect such a world of a difference now. Brian helped and discovered the old throttle cable was binding up and causing some of the hard peddle issue or all of it.

Bracket is good to go now and everything clears. I am sending this filter back (well Brian is) and am going to go with a slightly bigger one as I need a little more clearance at the top of the carb. By next week it should all be completed and on to the next!

Also changed the plugs again tonight. Put in some accel header plugs. Made it all much easier to do. I was having a issue of burning some of the boots of the wires up on the headers so replaced those as well. The car is running much better and feels totally different.
