  • [Project] Phantom's LS1 Computer Swap

Well I have started my LS1 PCM Conversion on my car
I have somewhere around 6-8 hrs into swapping pins and getting the harness back into shape.

I will be as descriptive as possible on what I did for this so I'll start off with links.

All parts can be bought through EFI Connection or Ebay such as PCM's, Coils, Timing Covers and LT1 Harnesses if you need but you must get the parts listed on his site so it will work.
Pin-Out's for conversion on this pg. also.

    EFI Connection: http://www.eficonnection.com/24x/default.htm

    Help full LS1 Pin-outs:

    2000 LS1 Pin-outs: http://www.ls2.com/boggs/torques/00pinpcm.htm

    2000 LS1Schematics: http://www.lt1swap.com/2001_ls1_schematic.htm

Helpful stuff from ShoeBox for the LT1:

    Clickable 1995 A4 Harness: http://shbox.com/1/harness.htm
    LT1 Connectors : http://shbox.com/1/harness_connector_faces.htm
    95 LT1 Pin-outs (96 & 97 Also) & Wiring diagrams : http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#1995_pcm_pinouts

I purchased my PCM, Harness, Timing Cover from Ebay, I already had the LS Coils.
    New Uploads 103.jpg
    New Uploads 105.jpg
I purchased the DIY Wiring kit along with the 24X LT1/LT4 Package (on it's way).
    New Uploads 104.jpg
    Tools:
Small Zip Ties work really nice to help keep the harness in line while doing the pin-outs.
I just used small screwdrivers to remove pins, wire cutters and pliers if needed.
    New Uploads 129.jpg

I started out by removing all the wire loom and tape that was holding the harness together so I could chase wires and remove any that were not going to be used.
    New Uploads 106.jpg

Make suer you mark your LS1 plugs so you don't cross wire any thing!
I did R for Red and B for Blue.
    New Uploads 112.jpg

Then I started with the LT1 Red Connector and started to remove pins and add them into the LS1 plugs till I completed that plug
To remove the covers of the LT1 plugs you have to push in tabs on the side.
    New Uploads 109.jpg
    New Uploads 110.jpg

Then to remove the pins you just fold back the little plastic clip and hold it and push gently on the top of the in and it will come right out the bottom.
Pins I deleted out of the Red Connector are: Red 9 EGR, Red 14 Air Pump, & Red 23 Traction Control
    New Uploads 111.jpg

I had a few cut wires for the trans that I'll have to splice when I get the harness in the car, no big deal.

sweet!!!! So when should you be done? Also, this brings the car up to OBD II and the tuner programs think the motor is an ls1 right?

yes. You basically just reverse two of the injectors and coil packs to trick it into working with the LT1's firing order. A laptop with HPTuners or EFIlive will think its tuning an LS1.

My first what the heck came when I had to wire up the Cam Shaft Position sensor.
IN the kit they send yo a pre-fabed plug for this and it took me a bit to figure out where it goes.
The big Grey plug attached to the Opti Plug so about 1/2 hr later I had everything rewired and labeled on my plug sheet.
I matched the colors from the opti plug to the supplied plug so I wouldn't have any issues if I needed to chase anything.
This don't have to be done but it's the way I wanted to do it.

            New Uploads 123.jpg

My next delima was where did I get the PWR for the coils.
A quick e-mail to EFI and I had my problem solved.
Plug C100 pin G is the main PWR to the LT1 coil and that wire gets spliced into the 2 pink wires on the coil bank plugs supplied with the kit.
The 2 black wires on the coil plugs are Ground and can be grounded to the block.
I warped these up and will deal with these when the harness is in the car.
The coil plugs are a straigt forward pin-out, just follow EFI's pin-out pg.
One Bank has Solid wires and the other has Solid w/ stripes so make sure you pay close attention to that.

            New Uploads 128.jpg
            New Uploads 127.jpg

Finally I just had to lay everything in and zip tie it so It can be taped up when I get it into the car

            New Uploads 130.jpg
            New Uploads 131.jpg

Now for the C220, 230, 100, 105 & Engine Temp Sensor Plug I deleted some wires that were not needed by because they weren't needed in the conversion.

            Deleted pins by plug:
C230: Pin C Diagnostic Request Signal - Conversion
LT1 Blue Plug 20: Diagnostic Request Signal - Conversion
LT1 Blue Plug 3: PCM Ignition Feed - Conversion LS1 only uses 1 PWR Feed.
LT1 Blue Plug 24: A/C Evap. Temp. Sensor Signal - Conversion
With the pins you switch for the A/C EFI says it will work right.
LT1 Clear Plug 22: IAT Signal - Me
LT1 Black Plug 16: IAT Sensor Ground - Me
Engine Temp. Sensor Plug: Pin B Sensor Feed to PCM - Conversion (same as Blue Pin 24)
C100: Pin E Air Pump Relay - Me
C105: Pin A Traction Control - Me Don't have it
Pin C Traction Control - Me Don't have it
Pin G Traction Control - Me Don't have it

            Other side notes:
On the EFI Conversion sheet you will see on the 1st pg. that there are 4 different pin #'s for the LS1 Blue 1pin.
These 4 pins will get separated between these 4 LS1 pin Locations:
            Blue 1
            Red 40
            Red 1
            Red 40
I just started with the top on and worked my way down the list.

LT1 Pin Black 6 shows up 4 different times.
You will have to run your own wire to ground these functions
So LS1 pins that need separate grounds run because they are not there in the LT1 harness are:
            Blue 53 (Auto only)
            Blue 54
            Blue 61
            Blue 80

Also on the Blue LS1 Connector Pin 20 has 2 pins on it from the LT1, Black 15 & 31.
You only need one so I took the 1st on on the list, Black 15.
            I deleted Black 31because it wasn't needed.

There are a few spaces in the EFI sheet that are blank:
Knock sensor 2 - Optional - Blue LS Pin 11
Low Oil Level Switch - Optional - Blue LS Pin 70
Alt. L Terminal - Not Needed - Red LS Pin 15

A note on the Blue LS Pin 70:
EFI told me that it was optional but also said the didn't know if it would kill the engine if wired into the PCM.
            Do at your own RISK!!!!!!

Well that about wraps this part up.
Everyones conversion will be a bit different so you will have to do what you need for your application.

The car will becoming home soon to start the rest of the conversion and when it does I'll post more

So how much do you have into the swap so far total? Looks like you picked up a spare wiring harness too, right? May take me a few years but this is pure WIN.

That's awesome, Kyle! I know this is a retarded question but you used an LT1 harness, right? I have a spare 1995 LT1 w/ A4 harness that I've been hanging onto that I picked up for $75... I might have a new use for it.

                          Do it brian

Lots of people pave the way so when I do this in a few years its much easier and there are no unexpected issues.

I paid a little bit more for mine but it was the only M6 harness at the time that I could find.
