  • I'd just do a basic check for play in the valve at extension and decide based on that. usually the intake side is worse than exhaust.

        • New cam is in!

What a NIGHTMARE that pick up tube bolt was.

New timing chain and oil pump as well.

          • Learning a lot about LS architecture here Michael. It's been many years since I've seen one apart.

Pickup tube bolt difficult...is this because you are working on the engine in-car?

Is that the new oil pump pictured, at the front of the crank?

            • Yes and yes.

I dropped the oil pan as far as it would go but the pick up tube is still tucked up in the pan enough to make it a pain in the butt.

Granted I wouldn?t have had enough room in my current garage anyways but if I have to do it again the motor would definitely be coming out.

              • Agree in that it was really nice to tear one of these down which always makes it easier to understand where and what everything is. I definitely would not have wanted to do anything related to the oil pan if it was still in the car.

                • Ordered the speed engineering long tubes and I went with the BTR trunion upgrade. Sounds like people prefer the BTR kit over others for a good middle of the road price vs the CHE or Straub $$$.

Few things I have left to get:

                  Head bolts
                  Intake gaskets
                  Oil pressure sending unit
                  Rear connector I yanked out
                  Plugs and wires (TR6s?)
                  Valve cover gaskets
                  Fluids
                  Tune

Does anyone have a picture of the (I believe) map sensor connector? My dumbass yanked the wires right out of it so I need to know what wires go where into the connector. Should be 3 wires.

Is it completely stupid to drive approximately 40 miles to the new house untuned? I mean I don?t have bigger injectors so I should be okay right?

                  • Got some good work in today.

Got the heads on (somewhat). I think there is still some coolant in the bolt hole even after vacuuming and blowing it out. So the heads are just sitting on there currently.

Got the balancer on. Timing cover, lifters, trays, starter on.

Going to blow out the holes again tomorrow and torque the heads (not looking forward to torquing them (stock bolts)).

We put the new connector on for the map.
Installed the oil presser sending unit.

Then it?s the home stretch!!! Going to try to do the trunion upgrade tomorrow at work. So we can finish the top end.

Radiator is next, then I can do the front accessories.

Got new intake gaskets, head bolts, oil pressure sending unit, new map connector, valve cover gaskets.

I think all I need is fluids.

                    Headers will be here Tuesday.

I think my only question is, the back of the intake there is 2 vac lines/ports. One is for the hvac. Do I just block off the other? It was going to my egr system I believe.

Why the concern over the stock bolts?

Stock bolts have to be torqued and then another 90 degrees vs arp is just torqued to a ft lb. Plus with the motor being in the car it isn?t fun reguardless.

                          • Heads are officially on and torqued. Much easier then expected.

That?s about all we got done tonight (only worked on it for about 2 hours).

                            Next will be the longtubes.
                            Then probably the radiator.
Then rockers, valve covers, intake, coils.
                            Water pump, p/s pump/pulley.
                            Coolant, oil.

Why the rebuild on the rocker trunions? What is the upgrade?

There are little caps on the end of the bearings then tend to come off and throw the needle bearings into your motor. The new kit comes with snap rings that prevent that.
