If you aren't overwhelmed at first then you have a LOT to learn, no worries Mike but I will say that its not always as easy as slapping a turbo kit on the car and making power. If your going to do it right and make it last you need to get familiar with the car and how everything works and what the parts do. Once you have a good understanding you will have a better idea of what you need to do.

Standard journal bearing overseas turbo. I would go with a Turbonetics unit all day for only a couple hundred more as they have a better reputation and come with a 1 year no questions asked warranty!

Mike the MAF will depend on your tuner - and their preference. Some like MAF, and other like SD.

FWIW - the cost of a really good tune - street/dyno, you can buy hp tuners and tune it yourself........but that throws another thing to learn into the mix.

I know for myself - I couldn't live without HPTuners with my car N/A, and I'd be using it more if my car was boosted.

The problem with the turbonetics tc76/78 turbo, is the small turbine wheel. That turbo is essentially maxed out and has back pressure issues. If you want more you're forced to go with a different turbo. You're better off with an on3 or a magnum turbo

Stay with 04 and newer 5.3's, they have better rods.

Are you saying he's better off because of cost? I thought the on3 / master power / magnum had a 65mm turbine wheel compared to a 68mm for the TC series...?

                    ^ Fact.

If all he wants is 550-600 RWHP a TC76-TC78 will do that all day long on 327 inches

                          We can make this simple.

If you want to make 600 rwhp at the most. You will be just fine with an ON3 or Turbonetics TC76 or 78. If you want to make above 650 rwhp, you should think about getting a Comp 7479 or 7879 or a Precision 7675.

My Comp Billet 7879 came in today, this thing is GORGEOUS!

I always thought they had a 75-76 mm turbine. I never really looked into it being inducer or exducer. Good catch. I wouldn't waste money on a turbo that's maxed out is all I'm saying. The TC serves its purpose but IMO I would want room to grow or something upgradable.

tj tuned my car on 12psi. made 552 on an ls1. i put in a 2 bar map sensor 82lb injectors, walbro 255, and he did a speed density tune with it. it started up and idled perfectly in 30 and 100 degree weather. car ran good and strong. he said with the 98 he suggested to do a sd tune because the maf tables dont read past 500rwhp. or something along those lines (all above my head).
