buuuut, maybe if jon wasnt such a jerk, hed already have the research done
Jon and I have both done our share of research on this. S60 is the way to go when it comes to ET per dollar. Unfortunately its not the lightest, but he did save 8 lbs rotating weight by using the Strange S-trac over the Eaton True-trac so hopefully our dyno results will be more favorable than the typical S60.

hoogiesngrinderz - any info?

I plan on taking some form of action on this project around March/April so I've still got time to research.

oooh, thank you . It will be a while, but your info is definitely useful. Zero way to further minimize loss with rotating weight?

You could run a spool differential (thats a no-no on the street), and run drilled axles. Thats about it for rotating weight specifically. Also when people say 28 or 35 spline axle thats basically just the size of the axle. Smaller would be lighter, but also weaker. Stock 10 bolt axles are 28 spline.

As for Non-rotating weight (weight that wont affect the parasitic loss) you can cut quite a bit off by using a fabricated housing but those are $$$$.

Keep an eye out for deals, that's how I keep the cost low. Weeks, sometimes months of searching ebay and CL in my spare time.

I don't like to buy used cone style clutch posi's, not rebuildable and not worth building a test jig to see what the breakaway torque is. I don't mind buying used Torsen units for cars or Gov-Locs for very light duty trucks. I've never paid over $150 for a Torsen, and that came with 3.42 gears. A bearing/shim kit is about $100.

If you want to do a new gearset and a new carrier, that gets expensive. 3.73 AAM ring and pinion (OEM) run about $250, Summit brand runs about $160. 3.90 Motive gear is a bit over $200. A new Detroit TruTrac carrier is around $380.

When it comes to tools and know how, borrow them. A 0-75 in lb dial torque wrench is essential. I use a bearing splitter and a press for the pinion gear, I have the Napa machine shop pull carrier bearings off used units. I have a slide hammer to pull axle bearings. I then use a dial indicator with a magnetic base to set the lash.

I would like to see a spooled car on an auto-x course, I think that would be a riot to watch

If these things didnt cost $3k a pop I would gladly give a spool a try. Its just not something i want to experiment with and then not like. I already tolerate cam surge, aggressive clutches, and loud exhaust and none of it bothers me so it wouldnt surprise me if a spool did OK in my car. The back end is a tin can anyway.

Well I kinda haven't made up my mind yet, but thats more financial than technical. I do have it narrowed down to an S60 or rebuilding the 10 bolt (and then breaking it again and buying an S60 )

I wish i had a video of my last autocross. I think the back end was loose 80% of the course. Maybe thats why its tired of my shit... Thanks for the info btw Michael.

I ended up ordering the s60 from CRP. I went with 3.73s, S trac (35spline), relocation brackets (now standard), 3 ch Abs, a chrome moly driveshaft, chrome moly yoke, and black powder coating. Should be a solid setup... I'll let you guys know how it comes out. It was killing me to add the extra weight but the fab 9s are over 1k more. I only expect the weight difference to be 10-40 lbs. I am gonna get a umi relocation bracket, and some m&h drag radials, should be fun! I'll keep you guys posted.

Quite a few road racing guys use them, they just have to retrain themselves to avoid getting into a bad situation.

It's worth it if you have any interest in it. Now CornerCarvers... don't visit there unless you have an engineering degree and you can deal with a bunch of 50 year old toddlers.
