no I just meant that its not your plugs and wires since they are new. It could be the throttle position sensor-It might be going bad.

What's a TPS?

tps controls fuel. most of the time a TPS issue will appear as a "dead" spot in the throttle. Normally increasing or decreasing throttle input will make the issue go away

A cat issue normally gets worse the longer the engine runs, more load or as rpm increases. Normally the worst at high load, wide open throttle conditions

Should read between 0.5 and 0.6V when properly adjusted.

So it stalls when I go to start it, but only sometimes. As I drive down the road, it kind of sputters, like it's not getting fuel. The RPMs and speed drop and if I give it more gas, it clears up. Also if I just hold my foot there, it sputters and clears up like the fuel wasn't getting in there. Also, there's a nasty smell like burnt paper or sulfer at times. The car is not over-heating though. What do we think it is??? I'm thinking fuel delivery or emmission control.

I don't see how a TPS would cause the smell through. I would still lean more towards a CAT going bad.

Has the Catalytic Converter ever been replaced? How many miles do you have on the car?

Check for codes. It could be some other things but without seeing, testing stuff its just a guess.

A faulty tps could be causing it to run rich or lean condition were its dumping fuel & would create a smell from the cats.

Something else to check though would be the coils

OH ok...my battery gauge was flickering a little to the "8" side (is that negative?). Does that have anything to do with anything?

Maybe I have dual issues at hand. I don't think it has ever been replaced. 122K on the car.

I think I'm just going to replace the TPS and do that straight pipe thing...we'll just fix it all! LOL

hmm. more issues. check/clean the battery cables. ground cable on engine.
Its could be a ton of things. I would take it somewhere instead of guessing if your having all this issues.

it could be causing it to run rich or lean - which if its dumping fuel it would create a smell from the cats hook a scanner to it and slowly increase throttle (engine off) while watching tps Voltage.should go up smooth and not have any dead spots

You measure TPS voltage at the sensor.

I would drop the exhaust and run it. If that clears it up than you know its in the converter and if not than that's eliminated from your list of possibilities anyways. Plus its free.

I'm leaning towards a clogged cat myself....I've experienced a bad TPS myself and it did not act in the way you describe at all.

Does it throw any codes? My TPS set codes when it freaked out during the last winter...but then again, it was a voltage issue.

Well, I had to call a tow truck today at the gym. It just barely made it into the parking lot after stalling in the middle of the road twice. Seems like a fuel injector. Kyle's gonna look at it tomorrow.
