  • Anyone use non synthetic oil in their car?

I know many of us use synthetic but do these cars really NEED it? Do we get anything in return for using synthetic?

On another forum I was ready an oil thread/war and I wondered what every else thinks. Cheap insurance IMO but the question is still there.

I use synthetic in my pickup and in my TA, its probably not needed, but it can't hurt. I'll pay the little extra..

To my knowledge LT1 Corvette had Mobil one for better cooling while LT1 F and B bodies could use non synthetic oil (F car has oil coolers/stabalizers).

My Cobalt requires synthetic as it helps with cooling the turbo
My Chevelle get Brad Penn racing oil (flat tappet cam)
Corvette gets Bran Penn racing oil (flat tappet cam)

And you like you said many of use use synthetic oil and don't NEED it.. many of use change our oil too often! How about when did you last change your coolant?

Since my car uses a couple quarts every 5000 miles, I use the regular stuff.

I use quaker state 5w30 in the truck, and will probably use the same in the camaro when she is ready for some lube. I also agree we all probably change our oil way too soon. Todays engines ( last 15-20 years ) use unleaded fuel and are built to run cleaner. The oil doesnt get dirty so fast. My truck uses 7.5 quarts of oil each oil change with an larger size filter. I usually take it till its dark in color or about 8-10k.

There is really no way to know how well any oil is doing without a UOA test, I just looked at a UOA on KENDALL synthetic oil after 5k miles and the oil was shot. The oil was shearing to a lower viscosity and the wear metals were high and this was on a new unmodified GM V6 CUV that the dash oil monitor was saying 50% life left. All I know is every oil, filter and engine is different and may require more or less protection but i will never trust the oil-life monitor on the dash of a GM vehicle.

I use M1 High Mileage in the Camaro and Delvac in the truck. I'd run syn but I prefer my oil cooler lines to not start leaking.

I use Rottela T in the old Camaro because if you are running a Flat tappet Camshaft you need to run an oil with a ZDDP additive in it above 1200ppm. Other wise you wipe the camshaft out. Brad Penn and Shell Rotella both have the ZDDP additive above 1200ppm. Most all of your racing oils like Valvoline VR1 and Quaker State Racing oil have high levels of ZDDP (Zinc) in them. However the newer Shell Rottela T is getting the ZDDP additive lowered every year. I won't be using Rottela T any more because of this reason.
My other 3 vehicles get Mobil 1 only. I drive about 35,000 miles a year on my DD and only change the Mobil 1 every 10,000 miles and it still looks fairly clean!
The other 2 cars don't get driven that much and they get changed at about 7k- 9k miles.
When Mobil 1 first came out back in the 80's they claimed that you could leave that oil in for 24,000 miles!
I would not recommend that though.
