  • Cant get my powder coated wheels clean....

Hadnt washed the car since I drove it this year, and she was pretty dirty.

Front wheels looked like this when I started.

After scrubbing with car wash soap and a wash mit they looked liked this, all streaky. So I moved on to wheel cleaner, didnt make any difference at all.

Meanwhile the backs cleaned up fine (as usual) yes I know I havent done the inside of any of them yet....

What type of brake pads do you have?

Also, what wheel cleaner do you use?

Hawk HPS or HPS+ I think. There quite new (think 5 to 8k), but the wheels look like this after about 3 or 4 days of daily driving. So im about to pitch them. They bite good but damn are they dusty. Duralast gold c-max in the back.

I know some brake dust can be nasty stuff! After a track day on Hawk DTC 70's and 60's, they covered my wheels and letting them sit for a few days made them a ***** to clean and it was starting to eat the finish of the wheels!

IF you get them clean again and how you want them, I would probably toss a bunch of coats of wax on them to prevent crap from sticking and clean off easier.

I would try wheel acid on a test spot. My snowflake wheels were terrible when I got my camaro but after a tooth brush and wheel acid they looked great.

They BETTER come clean again.... I just had them powder coated last year.....

I tried the weakest wheel cleaner I could find that was acidic. It was for polished, aluminum, and MAG wheels I think. They also had for painted/clear coated wheels (which was supposed to be one step stronger) and then for chrome wheels (which was supposed to be the strongest.

The powdercoat guy said to treat it like paint, use soap and water. No cleaners. But thats obviously not working.

after you get them clean, use a product called wheel wax, that shit works great and nothing will stick your wheels again. Made cleaning my motorcycle wheels so much easier.

Are they stains or are is it something stuck to the surface? Can you feel it?

Simple green - spray and soak them, then scrub....should take it off without killing the powder coat.

Cant feel anything, it actually appears stained.

I didnt soak them in simple green, as that shit works so good for cleaning everything the thought actually scared me of wrecking the powder coat.

Ive got some WD in the barn I will try tomorrow. I have heard of that wheel wax stuff, just hadnt heard of anyone whos tried it. I will have to get some.

also you might try GENTLY using a mr clean magic eraser. Can be very effective but can also act like sandpaper if you start using too much pressure.
