Yeah, I have thought about trying to do that was well. Hole might be big enough where I can just shove the bristles in from behind and get it that way.

Changed all the plugs today (had pulled plug 6 previously to replace the dipstick tube and it looked pretty bad), and got the new starter installed.
The new starter was far more pleasant to hold above my face as I installed it (had to do a little bit of filing to the opening in the block plate).
Considering I removed the original starter last August, it's nice to have a new one installed, finally (assuming it doesn't have issues - I can't test yet, as I need the battery out to do the body bushings).
Top row of plugs is driver side, bottom is passenger, running rear to front, left to right. I put these in back in 2016, and they only have a few hundred miles, but a lot of idling on them. Varying levels of how the plugs look - but plug six is clearly garbage.

That's what I'm going to guess - either that or it's not firing at all. That plug wire is basically impossible to know if it is seated or not, so it's entirely possibly it was simply not attached, not firing, getting coated in small amounts of oil (I'm sure the seals are past their prime, but it doesn't really smoke) until it looked like...that.Gone but not forgotten: 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z

Got a lot done today, and I certainly am feeling it.
Started off adding some heat-wrap to the starter wires, just to add an extra layer of insurance near the headers with how they route to this starter versus the stock one. Then I tackled the body bushings - they were clearly, absolutely, shot - so the new Global West aluminum ones should be a massive improvement. I made sure to put the alignment pins in when I was doing all this, just to be sure the subframe was actually in the right spot. All went pretty well there - right up until the end when the last one's cage nut broke free when I was going for the second click of the torque wrench. Go figure.
Since the front right bushing was all installed and torqued, I put the new battery tray in the newly POR-15'd area, which looks so, so much better.
Starter wires wrapped:

Over the course of definitely too long of a time, got the trunk POR-15'd, smoothed out with Bondo Glass to make sure the seal wasn't ruined by a shitty surface, sanded down, primed and painted (just used black - may go back and color match it at a later day...or not) and back on the car. Seal should be much happier now!

Might do one more coat on the horizontal surfaces of the car, but otherwise, it should be all ready for the show tomorrow! I started it up and let it run for ten minutes yesterday as well. Took a lot of cranking to get fuel to the pump, but the new starter was far less of a draw than the old one, and spun way faster.Last edited by MP81; June 9th, 2023, 02:52 PM.Gone but not forgotten: 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z

Absolutely - talk about a massive relief that I got the car all done (at least what I wanted to) by the show!
It drove well - it still has the weird inconsistencies in terms of running, but as far as driving, the hard left hand turns did not seem to result in rubbing, so I think that the bushings definitely helped there! I need to get it back to Brian for a re-alignment now that I've effectively changed the suspension geometry - perhaps we can dial in the camber numbers without resorting to 6.5 degrees of caster (which tilts the wheel back further and definitely doesn't help matters - though it's positive for handling).Gone but not forgotten: 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z

Finally got around to installing my fancy headlights in the car today - Dapper Lighting LED Sevens. What a difference - both in terms of looks, but also light output. I still need to aim them, but the aim is pretty close right now since I didn't change any of the aim of the bucket at all.

Yeah, I am really impressed with them - very well built and a hell of an output.
They actually make a similar light for 4x6 sealed beams, though I wish they came with the OE-style Fresnel lens...then again, hidden headlights make that a non-issue.Gone but not forgotten: 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z

Knowing your love of the Q-Jet, is there any chance that you change the fuel filter on it? I ask because our friends at Rock Auto, in their wisdom, sent me a fual filter for a carb'd 305, when I clearly indicated mine was efi. It's going in the garage otherwise.DynoDave

Yup - the rebuild kit came with a new filter, and I actually pulled it last year or the year before to check and make sure it still looked nice and clean, which it did.
So you ordered the FI filter and they flat out sent you the wrong thing?Gone but not forgotten: 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z

I occasionally go on little shopping sprees for the old cars when they are having close-out sales. I have the car on my list of cars, so they know the year/make/model and engine. In theory, it should show me only parts that fit my car. So I probably paid less than a dollar for this filter. Not a big loss. A lot of times they don't have a picture of the item. Just wanted to make sure I couldn't;t find it a home before tossing it in trash and recycle the box.DynoDave
