  • [Project] Documenting my build : name my car!

Like another member here I tend to love making lists, and I tend to get long winded. I apologize in advance because I'm sure I'll do that here too lol. The intention of this post is the first of many documenting my build. But first a little history. I am 34 and I have been obsessed with Camaros since I can remember. I got lucky because my wife just happens to love camaros herself. When I was much younger I was so torn buying my first fbody. I could not for the life of me decide if I wanted a bird, or a maro. I read the complete history of both cars and I can tell you more than you want to know about either! I have admittedly been mostly all about the third gens. As I have gotten older I have found some love for them all. The front end of the 72 and 73, the long streaking hood of the third gen, the aerodynamics of the fourth gen, the front of the 98-02, and oh how the modern muscle of the 5th and 6th gen make me drool! That being said....here's a history of my camaro ownership.

    Black 89 RS
    White 91 RS
    Teal 94 V6
    White 89 RS
    Currently DD- white 95 V6
Currently project - Monterrey red metallic 01 V6

The story Is progressing! Long story short, the first 4 cars I had to sell because I simply couldn't afford to put money into them. Sitting there was just teasing me, I settled on most of them, so I sold them. Most of them taking a huge loss of them. The 94 I loved driving, but unfortunately that was totaled by a head on collision with a Durango.

So Aug 2014 rolls around. 2 wives and lots of growing up later I decide that it's time to get back in the game. I start searching on CL and I come across a white 95 camaro with potential. My requirements were basically that it needed a rust free body. Anything else I didn't mind fixing. The car was pretty far away, so I trusted the pics, and Heck it was only $1000 so if the body was good I was ok with it. I go to pick up the car, and it didn't look nearly as good as the pics online, surprise surprise. So I drive it home and let it sit a few days till I can look it over. I started replacing parts left and right, nothing major, just tune up type things. Super long story, somewhat shorter...I have about $2k into this thing already, come to find out the floor boards and wheel wells are rusted through. I was pretty bummed, but I was prepared to learn to weld.

Then an opportunity came up, 01 camaro with the world beater 3800 V6. All it needed was a head gasket, supposedly. I've had 3rd gen V8s and I preferred the V6 so I traded my 00 grand am gt for the camaro. So did not have a blown head gasket. Had a blown engine! Spun rod bearing. That rat bastard lying son of a.....savior! This was my opportunity to tear apart my first engine ans build it how I wanted it. The body is excellent, has T-tops and a 5-speed. Excellent platform to build on. So while I drive my 95 daily, dang money pit, I build my 01 as well. And even though I really wanted a blue camaro, that Monterrey maroon metallic is a pretty cool color!

    Ok back to it!
So after I finished crying about how I got screwed on my car I started to put together a plan. I originally wanted to do a supercharger. But with the fabrication required I decided that will have to be a "when the girls move out" plan. I have 4 daughters ages 8, 8, 10, and 15 so I have a long time! If I find a way to make better money ie different job, then I will go back to this because I love superchargers! That being said I decided I wanted to keep it N/A and wake this thing up a little. So I went searching for a replacement engine. Sure I could have just pulled this one and rebuilt it, but I simply don't trust an engine with a spun rod bearing. Plus it effing cold and I didn't feel like it. If i were to buy a second engine I could build it and throw it in the car later, then sell the junk engine. Sounded like a great plan to me! So I found an engine for $100. It was from a 99 Grand Prix that had a fire on top. The upper intake and TB were missing, and the passenger side plug wires, and valve cover were "not pretty" but the engine turned over by hand. So for $120 delivered I bought it!

Since I had all winter I decided I was going to do this right!
Here are pics of the engine being torn down, pics after cleaning the heads, and a couple of me hand sanding the heads.

I got a name for your car.. Megatron!

I really like your 95 too, looks nice.
You should save some more money up, and maybe look into turbo charging, or supercharging that 01. The Buick Park Avenue (ahem my boat) had an option for a supercharger, so I would think the internals would hold up to the S/C, I think it's just a matter of 'fitting' it.
Do some appearance work to it too, maybe some angel eyes if you got the budget.
Good luck, and keep us updated.

Also, does one of them have leather interior?

I second boost, if it is within budget.

Good luck with the build, honestly its just refreshing not seeing someone swap out the V6 for a V8. These engines are great and very reliable.

Congrats on the new DD but sorry to hear about the big project that lays ahead. Definitely will be a learning experience to tear it apart and build it how you want.

Unfortunately neither have leather. On the 95 the previous owner painted the interior white and orange...and did a horrible job at that! The 01 will have leather eventually, but the interior will probably be last.

a supercharger from a 3800 shouldn't be too hard to find. My 04 GTP ran pretty hard for a big car with one.

Can't supercharge it with the gtp style because of the way it's made and mounted. I believe the pulley mounts to the back of I'm correct or the whole unit doesn't clear the firewall.

If you are going to boost I would go with a turbo. Easy to fab up log headers and made decent power after a tune. Of course it is more involved than just that. Do a few searches, there is more than enough info out there.

Just a little information about the 3800 series 2. Supposedly, the killer of the engine is the lower intake manifold gasket (I have to do them on the boat). So it's a good thing you are replacing gaskets.
Either way, looks like a nice engine. Keep the updates rolling in.

This is correct. Best bet is a Holden Supercharger and intakes, along with the TB, but there will still be fabrication, and the cost to ship is insane. Turbo is good, but I prefer the sound and instant response of the supercharger.

x9000 because the whine. One day when I get money rollin into my bank account and if i still have my car, which is extremely likely, I'll be heading down the expensive path of supercharging the good ol lt1 moneypit

IMO, a v8 will probably be cheaper than boosting the v6.

I know for a fact you are right about that. And I honestly contemplated that. But it would be even cheaper for me to just sell this and buy a V8 no?
