Can you get a measurement of the ports?

I just noticed you're running the Vortec style baseplate on the HSR. It doesn't surprise me that the gasket slipped, they don't use any of the pre-Vortec holes to position the gasket. I'd get some Vortec gaskets that match to port dimensions and put it back together.

Sometimes it's best to take a few steps back and cool off Been there, done that!

Very curious as to what the tune is on the car. HSR setups really need a '730 PCM to make full potential. I hope they used a '89 $6E mask tune at least to eliminate the cold start setup since the HSR doesn't have the provisions for it. My friend picked up a ton of HP when he switched his 87 IROC over to the SD setup. He was running a hot 400 plus cubic inch SBC with HSR and AFR heads.

He had it swapped to '730 and tuned by CARS back in the day, then the engine ate itself (no fault of Sean's) after a rod bearing went.

take the gasket off and flip it around or over and make sure everything matches up. it should not have any gaps around it at all and should be evenly cover all area's around the ports.

it will fit the other side fits just fine...the tune on the other hand, that is the mystery of that, I do know EVI had his car about 8 months and never did run correctly even after he got it back

Really need to know what heads are on it. There are so many options when it comes to intake manifold gaskets, the port height can vary as much as 3/8"

Edit: I wouldn't be too concerned with the water ports. Using original radiator, original heater core, or old pump? The look pretty clean to me, just a little oxidation.
Correct. I wouldn't be worried about the water port either. It's normal to discolor.

At least this is a good time to clean all the excess oil off the back of the motor. This wouldn't effect any sensors, would it?

                    • delivered the cherry picker, going to go through it completely, clean and double check everything. Still need to get a hold of a stock pcm when we are ready

                      • If you'd like to send me the PROM I can try to read it and check the tune.

When doing tunes for people I have them get the Moates G1 adapter (link below) and I flash a chip for them. I think I have two chips left.

Since there are no VE tables, I can really only change a few things. With the setup you guys are running, I'd suggest an '89 $6E mask which has a few more tweakable options. Injector size, fan on/off temps, fault codes, and base timing are the major ones. Really need a good working MAF to get it running right under 3600 RPM or so. WOT power comes with PE timing, enrichment percentages, and MAF tuning - all I cannot do without having the car or datalogs.

                          • If I understand you correctly your pulling the motor. Why would you do that? Have you looked into the intake problem any farther or at you guys hiding a ls swap lol.

                            • no no, Jake has too much into it now, can't turn back, we are pulling to clean engine bay, rewire....I wish it was as simple as an LS swap. We should have talked him into before this rebuild.
