Alternator pulley doesn't have a bearing, that would defeat the purpose of an alternator...

The bigger issue is finding out if the tensioner can be flipped into a counterclockwise tensioner. I may have a spare tensioner on the shelf that I can turn into a guinea pig.

Might get to it today, might not. I was hoping to get the engine in the 98 today. Need to find a flex plate or rob the one off the 5.3

If you decide to just delete the AIR pump and run a AC delete pulley leaving everything else the way it is, I believe you need a belt that is 97 inches long (I have the exact belt and part number I used in the garage) and you route the belt like this:

When under a load the belt does stretch some, having a different effect on the tensioner if it was flipped, making it seem like it wouldnt work, cause your right with the downward force it should be putting on a belt to take up the slack or stretch of the belt

If you go that route don't get the cheap pulley. They usually don't line up well

You could always go manual steering box, electric water pump, low mount alternator

If you flip the spring inside the tensioner, tension would be counterclockwise instead of clockwise. In theory it should be no different...or maybe that's just in my head

What do you mean they dont line up well? Have you used one!? I have had one on my old car for 2 years or more and I run one on my new car, perfectly fine, perfectly straight. Its a perfect substitution when deleting AC from your car.

I am still searching that one car out that I posted the picture of to see how he relocated his Alternator.

oh yes your right, if you flip the spring inside then it should work as it should....I was thinking just flip the whole unit.

Yup. Bought the cheap AC delete pulley and had to shim it to line the belts up right. Bearing didn't last long so I just bought the GM delete pulley. No shims needed, still in the truck to this day.

My bad MIke I read your post wrong, I thought you meant dont buy the cheap pulley as in dont buy the delete pulley at all. I agree with that buy the GM delete pulley that is the same one I have on both my cars.

So apparently that picture I posted of the alternator being where the SMOG pump was is a 91 cutlass alternator and it bolts right in...

I would like to remove the power steering but the s10 gearbox is 7 turns lock to lock vs having 3 with power steering.
7 turns lock to lock reduces the effort.
It also means with PS when I rotate the wheel 90 degrees, to obtain the same turning radius would require the wheel be rotated over 180 degrees.
