  • [Project] Huron Speed A/C Turbo Kit - Another Reason to Tear Into It

I think many of you may know the tale of the "Family Project" Firebird. If not and you are totally bored, here is the build thread: NSTYHBT

Well, Huron Speed has developed a turbo kit so you are able to retain your original a/c set-up. What a cool idea this is! They are currently in the final stages of verification. So again, this has given me a reason to tear into the Bird this winter even though I only had the car together for one summer season!

Turbos! A concept foreign to me that I have researched and am learning a load about them and I am also getting expert advice from Jon at Huron Speed. His knowledge and willingness to help is worth a million.

I decided on an oil-less Comp turbo. So, we'll see what happens!

Here is the patient and/or victim?

Per Jon's advice, I purchased drivers side truck manifold and a C6 Vette manifold for the passenger side. I decided to grind and file some of the casting marks prior to getting them ceramic coated.

Being bored one day, I decided to "gasket match" to manifolds even though it probably won't make much difference seeing that the exhaust ports on the heads are not matched to the gaskets. I found out this little tid-bit of info after I removed the headers.

Vehicle moved to the surgery room

Out with the old - I hate losing those Kooks headers

A little radiator support rework and paint (ala Brent)

A partial goody box arrives just in time

I love the direction you're going with this. Will really take the car to the next level. That has to be the perfect place to work on it too.

So, uh, what exactly is supporting your engine in those last pics?

      Thanks Jim.

The sway bar is temporarily holding it up in place. I feel confident that it won't come crashing down.

I was staring at that picture for a solid 3-4 minutes going "...am I just not seeing the kframe? What in the world is supporting that engine?"

Happy to see you posted this, Jim. Admittedly when you replied to one of Jonny's PM's via e-mail (in which it says in big letters "DO NOT REPLY TO THIS E-MAIL" ) I couldn't help but scroll through and realized you were up to something AWESOME. But I kept my tongue bit and didn't tell anyone, didn't even mention it to Angie.

Lol, it took me a few minutes to convince myself I wasn't seeing things either. I was thinking "damn, that's one strong trans mount..."

Hey thanks guys! This should be a fun project and Jon has been a great help in getting this kicked off.

This is not going to be a track car, although we will take it to the strip next year as long as we can get it hook-up! This will be just a street car with all the comforts of home (a/c) and even wipers (Brent?).

Today the 60lb injectors went in, the map sensor was unhooked while the engine was lowered about 2". I was foolin' with that sensor for awhie until I went to the GM service site and read on how to take it out easily; "twist the sensor towards the front of the vehicle to unhook it from the clip." Piece of cake!

I wanted to get the map sensor unclipped because when I install the k-member and raise the engine back into position, I didn't want to slice up my hands trying to get to the damn thing unclipped.

Then the new K-member went in without a hitch.

I hate to part with the Kooks headers soooooo:

Sweet. It would be nice to work on such a clean engine. I stayed home today too... worked on my car... repairing leaky things.

Where did u get the ceramic done?

It's not close to being out for sale or production yet. Jim is doing the initial kit for me then from here we will do production. No price or time frame is set yet, too far out yet!
