Can't decide on head gaskets. I can get the LS3 GM OEM for $76 or Fel-Pro 9199PT (don't think they are MLS) for $36, or spend a bit more on the Fel-Pro 1041 to bump the compression a little
Id go with bumping the compression a little

I'm with you, but it's $140 for those gaskets. Everywhere I turn on this "cheap" build it's another smack in the face. Nothing has gone to plan with this 98...

          • Yup. Three of the bores aren't perfect, very little pitting still visible.

I'm going to assemble with new rings, bearings, and .041" fel-pro gaskets. Hopefully I can find another used 02-04 Z06 cam and valve springs on the cheap. I'll run the snot out it and see how it goes. Keeping the 5.3 for a while as back up.

I'd keep your eyes open for a small cam on tech that you might get for just as much as a Z06 cam. Just a thought.

              • My last Z06 cam/springs setup was free But I'd like to stay around $100 for the cam and springs though, $150 max. I don't go on any of the other boards (except TGO once in a while) because the're full of keyboard brawlers.

Edit: Correction - I paid $140 for cam, springs, 85mm MAF. The LT1 cam used in my SBC was free

                  • The bottom end of the engine is assembled with the coated pistons and new rings. Heads have been cleaned and Comp 918 springs, retainers, locks, etc installed. Hope to have it 100% by the end of next week, possibly in the car.

Pushrods, coolant hoses, power steering cooler, and some other little things have been ordered. Final push to get this thing running before 2013!

                    • Making some progress! Havent touched mine, only collecting parts, researching, trying to figure out a budget, and dying to start tearing into it. Need to get that 5.3 over here so i can disassemble it for parts. I did fire it up with cutouts open in the garage and pulled it out to the driveway today neighbors must hate me im sure lol

                            • Not a big update, but I was able to turn the key and see how many miles are on this car

124,060 miles. Many of the last ones were probably excruciating considering on how dirty/beat up the car is. I'll do my best to bring it back...or pawn it off to someone else
