  • No problem. Glad it went to someone who can use it instead of getting thrown out.

    • rear end is back in its home under the camaro, just so I can move it around in and out of the garage. Picked up a few goodies as well, I couldnt have pasted up on. I also started D/A sanding down the car. Found one little quarter size bondo dent right at the passenger side spoiler piece. Other then that painting is gonna be easy and specially with no body work.

That's great news Greg! So not going to have it media blasted anymore?

        • Thanks Fred, the media blasting is not needed, I just need to take some strong de-greaser to the under carriage though. Since Im going to be spraying this in my garage, I cant wait for some actually constant warm weather

            • best way to remove old underbody coating ? should I just scrap it out, think aircraft paint stripper would work?

              • Is this the thick tar-like stuff? If so you can try a heat gun or if that doesn't work make sure there's nothing flammable on the other side of the metal (ie remove your carpet, etc.) and heat it up with a mapp gas blowtorch and scrape away the majority of it and after it cools follow by hitting the area with some acetone if it's just a residue left, or use a wire brush to clean the remains if needed.

                • sure is the tar stuff, but its hard, not sticky by any means. I have a mapp torch so Im gonna try that, then a wire wheel. thanks Jim

                  • No prob. Just as a warning, it's going to suck lol. That's the one thing that I universally hear guys ***** about when building a race car. I'd also have some wet rags handy to cool stuff down in an emergency. The tar will try to burn.

gregg you have the same coating i had on mine. i used a electric angle grinding wheel with a heavy wire wheel and it mad short work of it. then i sand blasted. or you can use acetone after you use the wire wheel.

                      • I spent the better part of one winter taking all that coating off of mine...what a mess. Like the other guys said....torch, scrapers and wire brushes are the only way. Lacquor thinner will help with all the residue. I bought a tyvek suit (with hood) and a respirator. You want the hood on the suit to keep the tar out of your hair cause it's not cool if it gets in there...ask me how I know.
