If you were closer I'd come out with my butane iron and solder it up in no time. Maybe one should be your next investment if you solder enough? I use it quite often - even for plastic welding and such. I got the Eastwood 9 in 1 kit for 30 bucks and it's worked well for me!

Butane soldering iron? Never heard of that. I don't really want to buy one though, since really it's unlikely that I'd ever have to use one again. I don't ever mess with wiring stuff unless it's absolutely necessary.

After fiddling for 20 minutes, I managed to get the pins out of the connectors and make one useful pigtail out of the two. Now the frustrating part is trying to splice it back into the harness. There is literally less than two inches of wire coming out of the harness that I can work with, and it's all the way to the firewall. I fought with that for almost 45 minutes tonight, without success. I'm using this kind of splice:



Getting that onto the tiny wire sticking out has been next to impossible. The couple of times I had it on there and tried pinching it down with the needlenose pliers, the wire immediately just slipped right back out. With where the wire is located, it's next to impossible for me to get both hands, a needlenose pliers, and light into that small area, while still being able to actually see what I'm doing.

This will work just fine and if done properly will last longer then your car will. Get a good connection, a good crimp and wrap it in electrical tape. I agree soldering would be best but this will still work.

Honestly I'd try to figure out some way to solder it instead of splicing... just my opinion but those splice joints suck and the wire will eventually slip out.

Just fyi the indicated butt connector in the picture is a heat shrink connector. When properly crimped and shrinked, they are near impossible to pull apart.

I've yet to ever see one of those properly crimped and last, personally. The least bit of force to pull on the wire and it slides right out from what I've seen. I agree though that it's the best solution for the situation at this point.

The problem I've had so far is that the ones I have crimp really tough. Twice I actually managed to get it onto the harness wire, but when I tried crimping it, the wire just fell right out like I never had it clamped it down at all (the fact that the wire is also ridiculously thin doesn't help either). I figured as long as it's crimped in place it won't go anywhere once I melt the ends and tape it up.

exactly, sounds like you need a correct tool. There are many other wire connectors out there tho...

What other kinds of wire connectors do you suggest? I don't have much experience with wiring, so I don't really know what options there are. This is just the kind that one of my friends happened to have on hand. I've also been borrowing his wire stripper, which is one like this:

yeah that one doesnt crimp...

The one you have will work fine you just have to get a proper crimp around the whole thing. They also do make them in all different sizes to better fit the wire you are using... maybe you have one that is too big for the wire?
