I have a basic OBD2 scanner, and it didn't pick up any codes at all. I'm going to go to O'Reilly this morning and see if I can borrow their more advanced scanner and see if there are any transmission trouble codes.

So I drained the oil to see how it looked. When I got under the car, the first thing that I noticed was that there was oil all over everything...

Ran a magnet through it, and here's some of what I found:











Here's what was left in the drain pan: lots o' metal



So...looks like the engine's going to have to get pulled. That means there's a lot in store for this car over the next few months:


Full rebuild
Cam
Heads
LS1 driveshaft
engine bay painted
2500 stall
New rack/pinion (needed for a while)


And I'm sure a bunch of other stuff

Pretty much haha. I knew this day would come eventually (after all, the previous owner ran it on 6 or 7 for more than two years). I just wish it wasn't my first time running at the strip

Time to start researching cam's.

Curious about the rack and pinion. Is it the rack or the ragjoint?

I replaced my rack and pinion only to find out the new one made zero difference.

IMO, add on a tubular k member if you can, really wish I would have.

I say the rack and pinion needs replaced because I went to two alignment shops after the LS1 brake swap, and both of them said that they couldn't do an alignment because there was "too much play in the front end" and my rack and pinion were shot and needed to be replaced.

How much does a tubular k-member run? Not sure I want to spend that extra few hundred bucks...

For the cam search...I really don't know where to start. Drivability is key, because this is mostly a street car. I would also like to have at least reasonable (20+ mpg hwy) gas mileage for just this reason, I don't want to be filling it up every time I drive it. Would probably like to make 325-350 whp.

Call AI and give them your goals for a cam, They'll get you exactly what you need as well as all the supporting parts to do it reliably. Takes all the guesswork out of it.

Yikes, heads are expensive. Should I really go with new heads, or would used aftermarket heads be good too? Or for what I want, should I just stick with the stock heads? I'm guessing new heads would really push me up beyond 350whp, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. And as far as stall goes, I'm thinking 2500 right now. Are you saying that I should go bigger than that?
