In my defense, I inherited it like that. That's why I didn't realize that it wasn't stock, I didn't know what a stock one looked like otherwise.

I'm going to get a street tune from Steve at SB Tuning (aka BLKHAWK here on the site). Although it may not be until spring...I feel like it doesn't really pay to go out to Port Huron to get it done and put it in storage a week later.

what is the benefit of an aftermarket MAF anyway? Just allows more air through? I'm sure the screen doesn't help airflow any. But even then, isn't the benefit from the housing rather than the sensor itself?

Doing anything with the MAF throws off all the tables because the air comes across it differently. This isn't a problem when you have a competent tuner. A stock tuned car will not benefit from any kind of MAF mod.Originally posted by Boost Addict View PostThe screen helps "mellow out" (so to say) the incoming air. Descreening can throw off what the maf reads.
In the LS world the best thing to do if you really feel the need to mess with the MAF is get a GM 85mm unit with the integrated IAT sensor. Don't think that applies to LT cars tho.

I will have a nearly new (less than 1000 miles) stock LT1 MAF for sale within a week or two if you're not in a huge hurry.

So if doing anything to the MAF throws off all the tables, would that trip a P0100 code?Originally posted by c0ncEpT View PostDoing anything with the MAF throws off all the tables because the air comes across it differently. ^anybody have an answer for this? Also, if I get a stock replacement MAF, could I just take it apart and use the housing for my current MAF (no screen or airfoils)? I guess what I'm saying is that since I'm getting a tune, I don't really want to go back to a stock MAF setup if the modified one will benefit performance.Originally posted by alone_and_insane View PostSo if doing anything to the MAF throws off all the tables, would that trip a P0100 code?

Wish you had an OBD1 car because I have the diagnostic test steps on all the OBD1 codes but not OBD2.- Brian Meissen

You do not need a modified MAF anyway. Its not anywhere close to being your limiting factor at this point.Originally posted by alone_and_insane View Post^anybody have an answer for this? Alright. But still, will a modified MAF cause the P0100 code? I'm trying to figure out if I do indeed need a new one or if the one I have will be fine once I get the tune.

Your best bet might be to try talking to your tuner and see what he's comfortable with when it comes to the MAF. He might know if that code is related too. I agree with Joel though, you're not giving up anything by going back to the factory setup, screen and all.

Thanks. I did send Steve a PM a few days ago about the P0100 code, but haven't heard back from him since.Originally posted by birdie2000 View PostYour best bet might be to try talking to your tuner and see what he's comfortable with when it comes to the MAF.
