  • I'll definitely keep a close eye on what you do, since it seems like we both have pretty much the same idea of what we want out of our cars. It's just gonna be a few years until I do this stuff...like, say, once I have a house and a garage

    • I can attest this car runs strong for a 177k mile bolt on car. . And yes nate, i would do timing chain, lifters, and the works on this build.

Honestly, since we are dropping the engine anyway you may want to consider having dowker do a budget rebuild with new bearings and rings. We'll see what a visual inspection shows us, but you would have a completely fresh engine then.

          • Took the car to Stanton on Sunday, car died waiting in line. Car was ideling while people were slowly starting to move in and it just shut off. Car turns over just doesnt start.

I had it towed to my parents and just let it sit for a few days while I get the **** lt1 i want a ls1 out of my system.

I can hear the fuel pump coming on so I dont think its fuel related.

            Coil, ICM, opti?

This is the 3rd time my car has been on this very tow truck. I had planned on taking insurance off it on Monday and buying a cam kit on Sunday night. Want to get it running before I do that.
            What do you think?

            • Shit sucks.

Check and see if you are getting spark. Pull one of your plugs, plug the plug back in the wire and ground it on a bolt some where while turning it over.

Just my opinion, but if you know you'll have this car for awhile I would rebuild the shortblock .030 over, all new bearings etc. If you are going to have the motor out do it once and do it right. My cylinders were out of spec at 132k miles when I pulled my motor. You don't want to spend the cash then spin a bearing. Just my .02

Either way, good luck. I'll be watching.

              • Id be willing to bet his cylinder walls are fine. Yours is the first i have heard of being out of spec, at any mileage. Normally when you pull them apart you can still see the cross hatching from the original bore. .030 would require pistons wouldnt it? Id try to avoid that.

Iirc they were $200-250 rings and pistons. Good piece of mind.

At that point I would be 1500 into this project and its just not worth it to me. When the motor does come out visual inspection will determine the next step.

First I need to get it running after its issues last week.
