coming from someone who has clearly never made a trap door and sealed it good. I did it on my old car and had 0 problems, fumes, anything. Just put RTV on it and put a nice piece of sheet metal on top with some screws and its good as new. The tank fits so close to where you are cutting you can tell there is no way anything is getting up in there that would cause any sort of harm. Let alone fumes once its sealed.

Its funny to see the naysayers who think taking an hour or two to drop the rear end is no big deal. When in reality it should take 10 minutes to cut the trap door and have easy access forever. Show me someone who did the trap door and regrets it, then maybe I'll start to second guess, but I'd bet a pretty penny you wont find such a person.

If you read the thread, Brian already said Steve regretted doing the trap door.

But he didn't specify why. I did the trap door mod as well, absolutly zero issues with it. Just got a slightly larger piece of sheet metal, put foam between the sheet metal and tank and zipped it down. It would seriously take me all of ten minutes to change the fuel pump on this car now. The first one took me all of an hour not knowing what I was doing. Just follow a write-up and you will be good to go.

I searched online and found on f-body.com, Racetronix had an account, and advised against the trap door. Citing debris which could cause premature failure of the pump, as well as not being able to clean the tank out.

Link? And exactly how the hell would debris get in there? Uless you were cutting the trap door with the pickup and top part off, and you would have to be a freaking idiot to do that. Debris isn't going to get in there, unless you are a complete twat and don't know what you are doing.

racetronix is just trying to cover themselves because some people will complain about anything. Some people use a dremel to cut the metal, this might leave some metal shreds. I actually just used a heavy metal cutter after drilling a hole. Anyone with half a brain would then pick up the metal shreds or shop-vac them up, including whatever dust might be on top of the tank, this cleanup would happen even if the fuel tank was dropped though. The only thing that could be iffy at all is to be careful when cutting not to cut too low and hit a fuel line or something, but if you follow the howto its darn near impossible to mess anything up.

Personally I'd rather not hack a hole in the back of my car to change a fuel pump. I mean how often do you really have to do that. I've had my car for 15 years and only had the tank out twice once to replace a bad pump and the 2nd time to put a walbro 255 in there. So for me it worth the extra couple of hours it takes to pull the tank to not have a fricken hole in the back of my car that I may use once every 5-7 years.

I'd do the job right and drop the tank. I've had my car for 13 years and dropped the tank once to put in a new pump. Once you drop the tank, enjoy the added benifit of being able to drain every last bit of fuel out of it so you can see all the little debris in the bottom....oh yeah, then you can clean them out too while your at it.

Yep - it shouldn't go out unless you constantly run your pump below 1/4 of a tank, which puts an unnecessary strain on the pump, as well as causing it to overheat due to the lack of fuel, which it uses as a cooling agent.

I doesn't matter......people just need to realize there is a right way to do the job. And it's not that hard unless your lazy.

Ask yourselfs how many GM dealerships have replaced a fuel pump by hacking a big hole in the trunk.

Nope Never failed at it because I never did it. Never felt it was necessary to hack a big hole in the trunk of my car. When its not that difficult to do it the right way.

Thread title change to "Trap Door vs. Drop Tank" ?

For me to make this decision, it would all be based on how nice my car was. I see the pros and cons and I think the quality of the car would be my personal leverage point.
