OK i have to just say that there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with priming the oil pump with the starter, provided everything was properly lubricated beforehand, which i am sure brian did. This is just nit-picky details - even if he didnt prime it at all it shouldnt have spun a bearing.
I primed mine that way with the spark plugs removed, and i had oil pressure in 5 seconds. Considering how slow the engine spins on the starter, that cant be any different than the couple seconds an engine runs without oil after an oil change.
Unless the engine was assembled dry, or has been sitting assembled for a very long time allowing the oil to drain to the bottom, there is no reason to do the drill method.
This is all besides the point that you usually cant even fit a drill under a fourth gen cowl anyway. (unless youve got some fancy universals)
correct, you want the cam lube and all the s*** from the assembly out of there before it even leaves the garage. I drained mine after 4 full heat cycles before even taking it off the jack stands.Originally posted by meissen View PostOh no doubt - I already told my dad we're going to change the oil after we get it idling and in closed loop for 5-10 minutes. Then we'll change the oil after 100 miles, then after 500, and then after 1000.Last edited by JoeliusZ28; May 1st, 2009, 12:30 PM.-Joel

just caught up on the latest...... sorry brian. ive also been here, not with my f body but them damn DSMs. had 3k into one of those 2.0 turbo motors and the intake cam seized and the motor was trashed. built another and that one broke the head off a valve putting a hole into a new piston, another build......the story keeps going and the whole time the wifey is looking over my shoulder, shaking her head and pissed that i had that much money into a $2500 car and it still didnt run. i sold my last one for $2500 and found out months later that the turbo went, sending more metal debris through the motor. i know the feeling brother. take your time and get it done right. oh yeah not to mention 2 summers ago, going through 3 transmissions, one after another with the bird. you need anything at all, let us knowsigpic

I think we've figured out everything that we have done wrong so far so we're all set to do it right this time.

The dent in the bottom of the oil pan never crossed my mind as a problem, other than pan holding maybe 4 7/8 quarts of oil instead of 5 qts. Today Brian and I were talking and it came up. we measured the dent and its position it is 7/16 deep and right below where oil pump pickup would be. So this is what I believe happened: 1. started car without flashing pcm. causing a lot of gas in oil. 2. broken wire in engine harness prevented VSS data from gettting to pcm. This caused engine to rev higher than normal and not shift correctly. 3. because of insuffecient room between oil pickup and pan bottom, high rev's caused pump to not to be able to deliver enough oil through engine, especially oil being thined by gas and not having the proper lubricating properties. Therefore bearing were run dry or close enough, to burn them and so forth the destruction. So I believe it was the combination of these mis steps that caused the problem.

Reading up on the break in procedures for a recently machined/rebuilt engine... I'm realizing when we "honed" the cylinder walls we probably messed up the ring's seating because we might have changed the roughness of the cylinder walls... thus since I never went balls to the wall to seat the piston rings I bet the rings never seated right and that's why I had so much gas in the oil. Even Steve said he was surprised there was as much gas in the oil as I was describing. Now.. I don't think the honing tool we used could really remove any metal from the surface of the cylinder walls but maybe it sanded the cylinder walls enough that it effed the seal.- Brian Meissen
