Update:
Yesterday was the J-BOM BBQ at Hines Drive Park (20 miles away from Ferndale). I decided to take the trip out slow and avoid using the freeways since I'm still not completely confident in the car. The way out was ok, but I've been noticing hesitation at partial throttle. The car is also backfiring at idle, but I think this is because the exhaust isn't completely sealed off and absent of any leaks. Regardless, I will be pulling the plugs tomorrow and having a look. I've still got stockers in the heads (AC Delco 41-952) and will be swapping them out for NGK TR5s.
Like I said, as I was driving to the BBQ, things were looking pretty good...until I took the very last turn before the park. Rounding the turn, my driver's side muffler pipe decided it didn't want to keep partying and promptly popped off! I dragged it in the hanger all the way to the parking area for the BBQ. Definitely one hell of a way to make an entrance! This marks the second time I've used band clamps on a car and the second time that they've fallen off. I even torqued the hell out of them using my impact wrench. Moral of the story:
Band clamps = uber suck ass
I have a 3" stainless steel v-band clamp sitting on the shelf waiting to be thrown on the downpipe of my Volvo S60R, but I'm going to order a second one tomorrow and use both of them to attach the exhaust to the headers. The entire system from there back will be welded together permanently so this won't ever happen again. I'm lucky the pipe didn't get lodged in a crack and push up against the underbody of the car.
So yeah, the plan for the rest of the week is to figure out the hesitation problem and weld up the exhaust in time for the M&G.
