Expensive introduction to the LT1

Hey all. New to the forum, new to F-Bodies, new to Chevy lol. After years of owning Mustangs, I decided it was time to switch to something different. After weeks of searching I found a 1994 Red Z28 with the LT1. no rust, pretty clean, K&N intake, Flowmasters, 75K orig miles. Everything seemed fine on the test drive. I waved 3 grand cash at the 20 year old girl with piercings stickin out all over. She Bite. Got the car last Saturday. I left her house laughing at her for letting a car with a blue book value of 5100 for 3 grand!!! Well, needless to say, shes the one laughing now. 1 word that I'm sure makes everyone on here cringe, OPTI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG! are you serious with this opti thing? my god. and of course the mechanic says since your doing it you might as well do a water pump, plugs, wires, drive belt, lol the list goes on. 900 dollars later, I still dont have my car yet!!!! Got a call yesterday, he said theres a small oil leak coming from a seal behind the timing cover. A spline drive shaft that comes from the crank????? Dont really know, all I know is its another 180 bucks for the part plus labor, and he cant get the part til monday!!!!!!!!!!! Welcome to the legendary LT1 lol. I hope i get it before winter!!!!

could of been a under 150 if you did it yourself, And I'm sure a few guys on here wouldn't mind helping, I did all of that within a day.

150???? For the whole thing?? Not just the cap and rotor, the whole optical pick up part with the disk and everything?? I was told if it was a 95 it would have been a lot cheaper, but the part for a 1994 was a lot more expensive? The part from Buff Whealen was 850 dollars! My mechanic found one from one of his distributors for 440 he said?

I have you beat. Got my 96, 4 days later the motor seized! $1500, different motor, and 13 weeks later I finally was able to drive mine again.

if you paid $850 for just the opti you got screwed, sorry man. Like nate said, once its done it should last you a long time. sounds like you got a good deal on the car though!

no i didnt. The chevy dealer wanted that much for the opti alone. So far im around 900 total for New opti, water pump, drive belt, plugs, wires, and oil seals on the timing cover.

so 850 for the opti alone, you only spent $50 on all the rest? or you got the opti somewhere else?

Welcome to the site Todd! Sorry you had to experience the LT1 crutch the hard way. $900 doesn't sound that bad if the opti was 440 and the spline shaft from the waterpump to the gear was $150. Water pump, plugs and wires, labor... all in all not bad. Now we just need to get you wrenching on the car yourself so you can save money instead of paying for someone to do the work for you. Anyway - welcome to the site and take some pics of the car once you get it back.

i feel your pain. i bought a 95 6 speed with 104,000 miles for $2500. what a deal, right? wrong. i too needed to put a new distributor in mine among other things. but at least after $950, i can finally say that she runs like a dream! haha

meh, first week, Or shall i say the first hour i had my car all forward gears shot except for the reverse, 1200 later after trans a week of driving and my heater core was plugged during the winter, cleaned it out, apparently he used stop leak, I flushed it out and bam, headgasket and engine problems, Pulled the hole thing, And did a total rebuild, I was so pissed with that car, but now i love her.
