  • If you wanna swap to a carb. I have all the parts you need. I would even consider a trade for the FI stuff. Tuning a carb is simple and with a WB O2 you can get just about the same fuel mileage and better performance than you can with TPI. Your top end horsepower will definitely increase. You just need the right combination of parts. If you are sick of the FI, swap it out, carbs and by far a less complicated set-up.

I really do want the power the carb would give me. But I cant bring myself to bite the mileage, drivability and long term value loss associated with the carb.

        • Yeah I agree, me personally, I would much rather have a FI than a carb.

          • I think I'm one step closer to fixing my problem. I did a compression test on all 8 holes, all of 'em are good. So I know its not an overtightened rocker arm. MAF sensor is good.

Someone on TGO suggested checking my fuel pressure regulator, and sure enough, it appears to be bad. This means at idle it would run rich. Normally the high vacuum at idle modulates the regulator and lowers fuel pressure. Mine doesnt, its just broke or something.

Crossing my fingers that this is the problem.

Anyone got a TPI fuel regulator ?

              • I am planning on going with an adjustable. There is one from summit that is like $65. Local auto parts wants $81 for a stock one.

I still gotta throw a fuel pressure gauge on it and make sure its bad. If its not bad ill be pissed, as funny as that sounds. I just want to finally know why its running so odd.

                • How do you know the reg is bad? was there gas in the vacuum line running to it? How are you so sure its not a fuel pump? Or possibly as simple as dirty connections going to the fuel pump.... check it out dude

Well if it were the fuel pump it would have to be getting too much voltage to make the car run really rich at idle. And the regulator wouldnt allow it to build anymore pressure anyways.

Im pretty sure its the regulator. When you disconnect the vacuum reference line for it, the PSI should jump from 37-38 to 47-48 and richen the motor out (maybe even kill it). When you unplug my regulator nothing changes at all. Not the least bit.

                    • WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO

In a spur of brilliance on the dads part he said "Hey why dont you pop the ECM from the 87 into the 88?"

So I did, with the 87s stock chip.

I turned the key, Vrooom! Oh hell yeah!! Snap!!! It runs like a f*ckin champ!

So excited all this BS is finally DONE. I just had a bad ECM.

Must less apt to sell it now!

Its one of the most crappy launches ive done... i made the mistake of going into 2nd and the motor just bogged out. Next time ill hold first and ride it longer. Gives you a good idea what the exhaust sounds like though. Reportedly there was a guy on the deck nearby who un-ammusedly said "wow" after. Yeah... people hate me. lol.

Oh yeah, its all CGI btw.

Getting my new tires put on Monday, along with an alignment that I'm not entire convinced I need. Oh well.

                                Also have court monday.
