Okay guys I need a little help deciding.
Ive had my car driving alright, but its sucking up gas real fast (more then it should) and been getting next to nowhere tuning with the narrowband o2 sensor. So the other day I was out in the garage getting pissed at the surging idle and I just really wanted to put a carb on it.
So I started looking into it...
Id have to do some rewiring on a few things, like the electric fans. Not a big deal i can handle it. Id also have to buy a non computer controlled HEI distributor and then put a special hardened gear on it for use with a roller cam. Then id have the cost of the intake itself, carb studs, brackets thermo that kinda stuff. I think I can get a carb from my dad. We have a brand spanking new holley 650 out there he bought for $20 from his friend. That carb seem a little small? It should work... maybe not the best but its by far the best deal I could get on one.
By going to carb id free up a lot of the horsepower that the Tuned Port intake is robbing from me ( at the cost of some TQ ). Id lose some mileage of course, and maybe some "driveability" but it would free up a lot for future mods. (IE not having to upgrade the EFI every mod I do with bigger injectors, different runners, etc ).
I just really wanted to keep this car pretty much stock so someday if it were ever worth anything its all there. But to go carb id have to sell my Tuned Port intake, computer and harness. I also will have wasted about $150 in my tuning equip that I couldnt sell (dad uses it too).
Your thoughts...?Last edited by MattODoom; April 5th, 2006, 08:10 PM.

Keep the EFI. The potential in an EFI setup is much greater than you think. A carb is good for WOT, and WOT only. They simply can't handle part-throttle acceleration well at all.
You're just having problems tuning your TPI. They have some unique bugs but if you picked up a book dedicated to TPI or consulted someone familiar with tuning those engines, I think you would make it much farther than calling it quits and slapping on a mixer.

its all going to depend what you wanna get outta it any rev's above 5,000 arnt going to do you any good with an TPI even one with port and polish and aftermarket runners.... although you can pick up another stealth ram or super ram for a reasonable price ive seen on thirdgen.org the only reason i stuck with carb this long is because the intake is good and can handle the rpm's and still flow but i am on the hunt for a nice "ram" setup so i have an excuse to move onto turbos... i dread the though of tunning a carb with forced air into it i know it can be done but im not the doctor of carb tunning and i can see myself blowing stuff up experimenting...Originally posted by Frank The TankTook the restrictor plate off to give the Red Dragon a little more juice. But it's not exactly street legal, so keep it on the down low.

The problem im having appears to be mechanical, like a vacuum leak, at least according to the TGO guys. With my mild cam it should run next to perfect on stock tune, but its WAAAAAY off at stock tune. Something is amiss. I need relash my rockers and get new intake gaskets I guess.

i'll take it.
crap your lucky. I was on my way back to my parents house from G Rap, stopped to get something to eat and the starter died right there. I was halfway between both places.Last edited by 1bad83ta; April 7th, 2006, 01:06 PM.sigpicAnd another thing.....when I gun the motor, I want the whole world to think it's coming to an end.

Yeah the TPI isn't going to good for you. Now your tranny is acting up on top of that. You need to sell it and get a Carb'd 3-Speed 2nd Gen.
