  • Third Gen cooling issues? Solutions?

This is the second summer that I have owned my 91 RS. I have noticed on the hot days, 85-90 degrees that it is running a lot hotter than it should. I know that the gauges for these cars are notoriously inaccurate and that most them run pretty hot anyway. I'm posting this thread to hopefully find a solution. Do I upgrade to a bad ass radiator, or can I upgrade my electric fan. The end of last season I put a new thermostat and fresh coolant in. I haven't seen a difference with the fresh stat and coolant at all. The car is still running at 3 quarters of the gauge. Thanks guys for any help or advice.

Did you back flush the heater core ? I would go with a Radiator to start or get a programmer to have the fans come on at a lower temp. What degree t-stat are you running ?

I'm running the stock replacement thermostat, I'm not exactly sure what degree it is. We didn't flush the heater core but the stuff we flushed out of the radiator looked pretty bad.

I would pull the hoses at the engine for the core and run the hose through both ways especially if the stuff out of the radiator was gross. Stock is probably a 195 degree and if you have mods maybe consider a 180 t-stat.

Thanks! The motor is all stock, but the trans is built up and has a little stall converter. I will look for a cooler thermostat and start pricing radiators.

get a infra red temp gauge and get a accurate reading. I thought mine was running hot and it turned out to be a bad sensor

Thanks Darren. My Dad has one of those, I will have to check it out. My coolant was bubbling today in my overflow bottle when I got home.

Yeah, my gauge is saying its running about 240 or so. Never gets into the red but it gets close.

Does it run hot on the highway or just in traffic?

Another thing to do is put a seperate trans cooler on it so that way the trans fluid isnt going through the radiator and that will drop you a few degrees as well

Yup, was just going to say the same thing. If you have a built trans with a higher torque converter, the hot trans fluid going through the radiator is just going to bring up the temperature of the coolant too.

When you have the infared temp checker do-hicky check the trans pan to get an idea of where the fluid temp is. Lots of variables here but try this stuff first. Do you have a stock water pump ?
