  • 90-92 tachometer issue

Does anyone here know how to fix the tachometer problems in the 90-92 gauge cluster. I recently purchased a new/used cluster from a guy on thirdgen.org to replace mine that was constantly pegged. The replacement I received works, but at times is very inaccurate. I found a fix on the thirdgen message boards. Was wondering if anyone locally (Metro Detroit area) repairs these clusters? Please help!

yes they can be repaired but they don't accept work from the public and it will likley be $3-500.

Ouch! I think I can buy a whole new auto meter cluster for that. Terrible! Someone needs to start repairing these out of their garage. They could definitely make some money. There were 7 pages of responses to this thread on thirdgen.org. The fix that these guys came up with sounds pretty simple.. I'm no mechanic though! Thanks Brian!

Micheal, how good are you with the clusters? Would you or could you reset the mileage for me? I had a v6 but went to a v8 cluster for the swap, illegal yes but the car is new, and no intentions on being fraudulent, but since the car is gonna be basicly new, it would be nice to have a fresh start on the mileage.

I've repaired a few tach clusters on third gens and I have reset the odometer in my Bel Air and the 89 Silverado...so yeah I can probably get it to zero out.

It sounds like Michael has you covered.
However If in the event Michael cannot repair it for you, there are several businesses that advertise on Ebay which repair clusters. The cluster I got for my GMC was mileage matched, had all of the updates, plus additional goodies I didnt have before.

They may have exactly what you need as well.

I pulled the tach and the chip out of the one I bought and put it in my cluster.. Threw the rest away. These guys on thirdgen.org are soldering resistors in over a chip on the board and its correcting the accuracy issues. Is that what you do Michael? I'm not very good or patient with a soldering iron.. lol

That's one way of doing it. You can also use adjustable resistors (potentiometer/pot resister) to dial it it.

Right. I need to find someone in my area that has done it a few times, So I'll feel comfortable with them ripping apart my dash. lol
