  • Cooling fan quit working

Nice timing for my cooling fan to stop working on a 90 degree day...
Fusible link D has burned up. Thats the hot wire that controls the power to the switch side of the cooling fan relay. Now can I just quick jumper a wire from the cooling fan to power (say to the battery) to check if the fan is bad? My second question is, is how do you replace a fusible link. I attached a picture of the factory splice and the fusible link. (orange wire that is broken)

    Edit:
I may or may not have made things worse. I jumped the fan to see if it worked and when I hooked it up to power all I heard was a loud click, then nothing. I hope I didn't blow anything else. The fan doesn't work when jumped, so I think I found the reason why my fusible link blew.

Sounds like you might have popped the relay. Try replacing the fusable link and relay and trace ALL the wires for the fan and see if there is a short. Is the fan running all of the time, or do you have it on a temp switch? Hows the car running with the new engine? Eric L

I put the wiring diagram in the first post. Fusible link D is broken. I disconnected the relay and jumped the cooling fan wire (black with red tracer) directly. So I eliminated the relay completely. So I don't know what clicked when I hooked the jumper wire to power. The fan doesn't run at all. In fact its hard to turn.

If its hard to turn I'd say you toasted the fan.

And you didn't blow the fuse in the fusebox?

Bought a new fan motor and wired up a new fusible link off the battery. Cooling fan now works. And MP81, if you look at the wiring diagram you will see that the 20 amp fan fuse that your talking about only covers the resister side of the fan relay. The fusible link that did blow is what covers the switch side of the relay.

Ahh - yeah, mine didn't have the relay, was hardwired to the ignition - thus, when that fuse blew, my fan stopped.

Not knocking Jake but I told him how to rewire the fan so it would work and I had some help with his wiring so it was a group effort
He did figure out that the fan was bad though
