  • Winter Build Up

I have some funds saved up and i'm looking to build up the iroc this winter. I want the best bang for the buck. Need direction. Heres the specs of the motor and what shes currently got and does.

    GM Special Performance 5.7L (pt# 12356644)
Supposed specs from the rap sheet
    300hp @ 5000rpm
    369 lb/ft @ 3500rpm
    Comp Ratio: 9.1 : 1
    Bore x Stroke: 4.00" x 3.48"
    Max rpm: 5700rpm

700R4 trans, Stock TPI setup, 3;70 posi(third set of gears, second rear end), hooker shorties with del. cat and flowmaster.
Went to the track this year ran around 87mph @ 14.7 Car gets good rubber shifting into second. think it eats the rear gears up.

Now about the car, I'm looking to do something major to make her scoot. Roots blower? ls1 motor and trans? Different TPI setup? What is the best bang for the buck? id like to make HP and have a much higher top end.

I dont like all the wires and crap in the engine bay and its really dirty, think it would be cool to pull the motor and clean the bay out, and get a new setup in there that doesnt use the TPI mess and easier to work on and play with.
    Thanks in advance

All depends on how fast you want to go, and how much you want to spend. Give us some more info. Depending on what you want to do may take away some of the streetability. And if you bump up horsepower you are goung to continue to eat rearends, just now it will be at a faster pace.

Well, your bottle neck right now is the TPI. You have a motor that makes peak power above where a TPI is capable of making peak power...not a good combo.

The biggest factor here is how much money you got to spend

i agree with james.. but ti all comes down to how much you want to spend, how fast do u really want to go, how much streetability do you want to loose and what all do u want to do with the car ?

              Whats your budget?

How concerned are you about driveability / mileage?

Do you have a preference between NA or any kind of power adder?

And right now TPI is a swill of electronics i dont like. Only been problems for me.

You can probaly do a lt1 fuel injection setup. I think you can make them work with sbc heads with a little work. And you can get the stuff used. You would lose low end torque but you would have more in the upper rpm's if thats what you want. Stock lt1's run low 14's with a good cam you could easyly hit mid 13's.

bolt on stock [and healthy] LT1s should be in 13s... cam should put you in 12s.

Yeah, I ran 14.8 with my 305 with 100,000 miles on it.

Something is holding that power back on your 350.

All depends on is you wnat to keep that motor or not, or even the TPI set up.

A holley stealth ram set up will have more top end.
I bought a Edelbrock intake and runners, so I know thats helping me out a little. But my 305 heads are a killer I heard.

My brother in law had a 89 GTA with the 350 he ran 13's with a 150 shot.
And that was on a stock motor.

Everything is going to cost money, all depends on what you want.

my heads may be off of the original 305
                              just thought of that.
guess the tear down will begin shortly.
