I called the guy today. Turns out he lives right down the street from where I used to live. I'll go check out the car tomorrow. All I managed to do today was sand a bit more stuff.

I'm not worrying about him being upset, I mean it's my car and all, and I know that T/A is worth more, even though at the same time it will become a Frankenbird just like my Firebird... I don't know, I'll figure this all out.

All I'm trying to say is that I've been through this myself and you have 2 people that obviously care about you enough that they've been willing to give up their time and help you out, and you should realize their investment in YOUR project and appreciate them for it.Originally posted by newfx11I'm not worrying about him being upset, I mean it's my car and all.

Yeah I know what you mean. We've both done each other favors and stuff, I'm sure I'll pay him back for it. Really I was hoping he could just help me out on certain stuff, it then began with him taking control of everything and I just sit there and watch stupidly. So now I'm trying to do more and I'm sure he doesn't want to do any more work to this car, even though I've realized we haven't done much work at all, but I still feel guilty that it's my car and he does most of the hard work and thinks I know nothing about this car.

again - been there done that - I had a friend when I was your age that taught me alot of what I know and I felt much the same. Paying someone back may not be the way to intially look at it - keep it in mind for down the road. Maybe take him along next time you go to look at it so he can get a feel for why you're looking to flip the script.

Yeah, the problem is, he won't be around until next week if he was going to look at the car. I already told him he can drive it a few times once it's done, he doesn't think I can handle that car, even though I'm sure I can handle a 301. Plus I've helped on a few restorations since I used to work at a restoration shop, but since he's older I guess he thinks he knows it all, even though I know what I'm doing. Of course, I've noticed a lot of people think that because I'm young, I must be stupid and not know how to restore a car.

The reality is that he does know more than you otherwise you would not be needing his help to this point. You may be very confident in what your abilities are but that doen't negate the fact that he and his father have tried to mentor you (for free and trust me thats rare today). I am an ASE certified mechanic and at 39 I am currently paying 3500 for being mentored about the rebuilding of my motor.Originally posted by newfx11but since he's older I guess he thinks he knows it all, even though I know what I'm doing.

We both know about the same with fixing cars actually, it's just that I guess he thinks he knows more because he is older than me. The only reason why he is helping me is because he has access to a barn and I was forced to put the car somewhere because my old roommate decided that since the neighbors were complaining about it that I had to put it somewhere. Otherwise, I would've done this whole job myself. Edit: But I do thank him for helping me with this car, it's not that I'm being selfish, it's just that it's my project and I want to feel like it is, right now I feel like I gave my project to him to finish because he does all the work. I'm sure you've been there and done that before.Last edited by newfx11; October 27th, 2006, 10:59 PM.

Any more news on the status of your project? I'm really glad to see someone actually deciding to restore a car themselves, I had a blast when my dad and I restored the Monte Carlo, I learned a lot, and so did he. It was tough, we both had our rough moments, but we came out alright. I wish you the best of luck in this build.Nick H.

Unfortunately I won't be able to work on the car until later next week because my friend will be gone. However, I've figured that I have two options, the first one being the faster one. I could either buy that T/A off that guy and swap out front ends, or continue restoring the frame and just stick to my original plan. I'll figure this out more later this week.
