I have a Core/Hurst shifter on the IROC, T5 though, seems like a pretty nice piece but I haven't been out on the road much with it

Well found out my dad used one of those "universal" synthetic fluids... which shouldnt have been a problem but from my experience synthetic ATF smells worse than conventional. Im going to change it out for the dexIII/merc it calls for and see what that gets me first. Worth a shot for $13.

Well changing to the standard factory recommended fluid was only a marginal improvement. Guess i gotta order a new shifter even though i have this pro 5.0 setup perfectly for me

Bummer to hear. So you've definitely zero'ed it in that it's 100% the shifter?

No where else it can be coming from really, it smells VERY strong if I pull the shift boot off the console after driving it.

I made sure to liberally RTV my shifter when I replaced it this weekend as I had this thread in the back of my mind and didn't want a stanky ride!

Im pretty sure its coming through the mechanics of the shifter rather than the seal around the base. That would be an easy fix though!

Well I'm about 99% confident I can say I finally closed the case on this one!!! and I didn't have to spend any money or replace the shifter Ive gotten comfortable with

Tomorrow I am taking the car on a 5 hour road trip. So i figured not getting poisoned and crashing my car into oncoming traffic was more important than a good shifter, id better just put the stock one back in. Well... I had a better idea. I'll let the pictures do the talking:

So for anyone that has this problem with an aftermarket shifter - all you need is the boot off of a stock unit!

I also siliconed around the handle and zip-tied the base... should be no fumes escaping whatsoever.
