Confirmed it is coming from the console, popped the shift boot off and can smell it in there. Is the shifter assembly itself a possibily?

Im pretty positive the shifter is the offender now to figure out if its fluid level, wrong fluid, the seal on the mount bracket or a seal in the shifter itself.

Interesting that it's coming from the shifter -- have nothing to add but interested to see what you find.

Well on a t56 fluid does circulate beneath the shifter where the linkage is, so it makes sense that the smell would be coming from there... But the questions why is this all of the sudden a problem, ive had this pro 5.0 since like 2006 and ive never noticed any smell from it. My theory, although unconfirmed is that the seal around the shifter is fine, and somehow its working its way up through the mechanics of the shifter.

Also, that fluid circulation must be speed, or at least rpm related because cruising at 80mph on 696 was the worst its ever smelled. I still have a headache from it!

Did your dad put in 80-90w in instead of ATF?

He used ATF but honestly ATF and diff fluid smell very similar to me.

I think ill try the grease trick tomorrow and see what happens, thats easy

Does anyone know a good place to get a hurst competition plus shifter? Ive always wanted to try one out anyway...maybe its an appropriate "easy button" for this situation. I only see the billet plus on summit.

Is the competition plus the "lesser" model that's nearly identical to the stock Hurst shifter? Because if so, I have a perfect stock Hurst that I'd get rid of if you're interested.

Dont think so i believe it has the nice looking chrome "hurst" handle with a white ball

That's the billet plus which has the adjustable stops and such. I have that shifter with the chrome handle and love it, won't ever change again. Personally, I like the leverage that the longer handle gives me.

They discontinued the competition plus btw. From what I've seen/understand, the competition plus is pretty much exactly the same as the stock hurst shifter base aside from the color of the anodizing.

I know its a good shifter, Im just curious how it would work with my pistol grip since I dont really like ball shifters. I bent the handle on my pro 5.0 to make it fit my hand better. Wish i had one to try before i dropped $200 on it.
