Alright This post might seem vague for now until I get more information from my mechanic soo Heres all I know right now. 1. I took the Bird into a shop to get a sandpaper/grinding sound checked out coming from the rear end. 2. They found metal shavings and what not in the oil back there 3. I gave them the go ahead to take apart the rearend 4. Im getting a rebuild because everything was to worn down to just replace the bearings and whatnot. I dont mind paying for the rebuild $2100-$2500 to get the car back to normal, and I dont have time to try and go to a junk yard and find a rear end or cut corners. so I have to pay full. He also mentioned that he would install 3.73 gear ratio or something by ordering an aftermarket part, His reason being is that it would be quicker for him to get an aftermarket part rather than trying to obtain an original part. I dont have any qualms with an upgrade but can anyone explain what might have happened or what to expect from this type of gear ratio or whatever it is. I didnt have time to talk to him today in person to get the full spectrum of the issue or the brand of the pinion he's getting. I'll get more info and let you all know as I get it. I dont know anything about drivetrains or anything so please uxcuse my Noobness

maybe he meant $280- 300?
What are you doing with the car?
personally I am a fan of lower numercial ratio gears. I like the highway drivability it gives.
prior to my corvette having an overdrive transmission with 3.73s at 70 mph was turning 3200 RPM, now with overdrive and 3.36s it =turns 2000 RPMs at 70 mph!

Correction, but still very high, It was $2112.00 thats two thousand one hundred and twelve for a complete rebuild with the 3.73 ratio gig. Now mind you I live in nowhere Texas right now, and with my job I dont have a lot of time to go bargain hunting and I need my DD, soo Im gonna get taken to the cleaners regardless. I searched the forums on different sights and Ive seen people say anywhere from 500 to 1800, so yeah im gettin screwed but this cars needs to be fixed now.sigpic"Dont hate....on a W68"

How is it possible that one person can claim this should be below a grand and someone else says its a pricey job? I mean I know most shops you go to are screwing there customers but whats the real situation with rebuilding a rearend, all I can say is that the sound it was making didnt sound healthy at all it was like sand paper grind with a frequency slower than the wheel rotation. and the metal shavings in the gears oil? sounds pretty bad. but yeah i could by alot of stuff for 2000 $$

You can buy a freaking 9in for that. That should be a couple hundred dollar job, ill even go as far as $500.
that is insane! And this is for a V6 car, so it's not like they're making it stronger or anything...

he's in Texas right now guys. For that price I'd just find one of the million performance shops around and have them put in a 12 bolt/ 9"/ or S60 and never worry about it again.Doing less with more
