change the plug wires that you damaged and go from there. Everyone that is giving him advice about the pump is just wasting their time if he doesnt go and change out the plug wires first.
Quit spraying that damn ether in it too. You are not trying to start a diesel skid loader or backhoe in the middle of winter... It is a Camaro.

agreed. use ether only enough to diagnose that it will run on it and put it back on the shelf. (once) that is stuff is not good for an EFI car.-Joel

Ether is not good for ANY engine, gas or diesel. We used to start diesel engines with ether but would spray it on the rag so the engine would suck the vapors in.
I think we all agree the plug wires need fixed but the vehicle runs on ether so the plug wires are not preventing it from running.
His fuel pressure is low but I 've seen Fuel injection cars fire and run (poorly non the less) on low fuel pressure. The spec I found for this car is 48-55psi if thats right you are 10psi low now is it low because of the fuel pump or the regulator? LT1s have a fuel regulator on the fuel rail controlled by vacuum. The pump has a bleed back valve in it to keep pressure on the system while the car is off this helps the car fire up quicker. I am not a fan of just throwing parts at cars to fix them. I would make sure I was getting a signal to the injectors and verify a good clean spark at the plugs. From there you need to figure out if the fuel pump or fuel regulator is causing your low fuel pressure problems.98 Camaro Z28

thats not correct. normal fuel pressure for an LT1 is 3 barOriginally posted by BigJeffSS View PostEther is not good for ANY engine, gas or diesel. We used to start diesel engines with ether but would spray it on the rag so the engine would suck the vapors in.

Normal fuel pressure is 41 - 47psi.
I am trying to swap out the fuel filter right now. If I have to change the fuel pump I am gonna change the filter too, but I am kinda hoping the fuel filter is clogged. That thing is stuck on there like a mother.
I know the fuel pressure regulator is vacuum controlled. I notice when I was the store one of the vacuum lines on the intake manifold on the driver side wasn't hooked up. So I hooked it back up. I doubt this has anything to do with this issue though.Last edited by Fox Slaughter; September 8th, 2010, 07:14 PM.Originally posted by Yoshi94Mines about an inch bigger than Kyles. I hate corrrecting people but the pressure number you are refering to is normal pressure while the vehicle is running which his is not. When the car is started the vacuum pressure regulator drops the pressure 3-10psi. I'll explain with the engine off no vacuum is being produced to help the regulator over come the spring tension resulting higher fuel pressure. (48-55psi) Ok engine now the engine started vacuum is being produced helping the fuel regulator over come the spring tension thus dropping fuel pressure. (3-10psi lower then with engine off) Also I am taking my information from General Motors SPO Fuel Pressure Systems test for 1995 camaros. I posted a small section of it below.
So if your fuel pressure is low then the spring in the regulator could be weak. So yes it could have a lot to do with your problem. Let me explain a little more if you have 38psi engine off and the engine started it would reduce the fuel pressure dropping it to say 33psi then your engine is running super lean.
Added: If your vacuum line for the regulator was off and you were producing the correct fuel pressures it could have caused your car to run rich.
Test Description
Number(s) below refer to the step number(s) on the Diagnostic Table.- Fuel Pressure Relief. With the ignition switch ON and the fuel pump running, the fuel pressure indicated by the fuel pressure gauge should be 333-376 kPa (48-55 psi). This pressure is controlled by the amount of pressure the spring inside the fuel pressure regulator can provide.
A fuel system that drops more than 5 psi in 10 minutes has a leak in one or more of the following areas:
• The fuel pump check valve
• The fuel pump flex pipe
• The valve or valve seat within the fuel pressure regulator
• The fuel injector(s) - Fuel pressure that drops-off during acceleration, cruise or hard cornering may cause a lean condition. A lean condition can cause a loss of power, surging, or misfire. A lean condition can be diagnosed using a scan tool. If an extremely lean condition occurs, the oxygen sensors will stop toggling. The oxygen sensor output voltage(s) will drop below 500 mV. Also, the fuel injector width will increase.

Usually the test to see if the fuel pressure regulator is bad is to pull the vacuum line off of it. If the RPMs increase a little bit, the regulator is working because taking the vacuum line off makes your regulator think you're in the throttle. If there's absolutely no change to RPM at idle with the vacuum hose connected compared to disconnected, then it usually means the regulator is bad.- Brian Meissen

But the car won't run so I can't test that theory. Hahaha.Originally posted by Yoshi94Mines about an inch bigger than Kyles. I need to get one of thosesigpicOriginally posted by ryanwarby01Put it this way, if you have a money tree a LT1 is a wood chipper!

Well you said you put the vacuum line back on when it stopped working - unplug it and see if it works again.- Brian Meissen

Well the fuel filter was clogged. Finally got it off and it was blocked put a new filter on now I have around 45 - 47 psi at the rail. Still no start. Pulled a spark plug looks fouled out but gonna test for spark.Originally posted by Yoshi94Mines about an inch bigger than Kyles. I gotta back ryan up on this one, I don't think those numbers are right. I think 43.5 psi is supposed to be what it makes key on, engine off. Maybe im wrong, but Ive never heard of anything in the high 40s or 50s on an LT1. engine running or not.Originally posted by BigJeffSS View PostI hate corrrecting people but the pressure number you are refering to is normal pressure while the vehicle is running which his is not.
Also not that this matters much but I made a 12 second pass with my car when my old pump was only making about 15 psi... didnt realize that until after the fact though
Point being low fuel pressure may not be noticeable in some cases.

No spark. Put a new coil on no spark. Still using the MSD wires. I am trying right now to disconnect the battery for 10 minutes.
12 minutes with battery disconnected, nothing.
When I pulled a new spark plug there was no fuel at all on the plug. So the injectors aren't firing I think either. Someone said this "but if you have no injector pulse, and no spark it's usually a cam or crank sensor. Do you have a RPM signal on the scanner when you crank?"Last edited by Fox Slaughter; September 9th, 2010, 07:22 PM.Originally posted by Yoshi94Mines about an inch bigger than Kyles.
