  • The items I unplugged where Coolant temp sensor on the water pump, AIR pump, (I don't have a fuse in the AIR pump because old one burned up could this be causing issues?) 2 electric fans, IAT, and MAF. I pulled the AIR pump back in this morning, the coolant fans yesterday, the MAF and the IAT, and the coolant temp sensor yesterday.

    EDIT:

I also noticed the RPM would sit around 1000 then would drop to 650 if I hit the gas it would go back up sit close to 1000 then drop after a bit. Vacuum leak?

Also 99% positive the plug wires are correct on the Optispark.

    • Just took off the EGR and blocked it and put a vacuum cap on the spot where it connects. I am having rotten luck with these headers and plug wires. I just burned the number 8 cylinder wire against the header. When I would rev the engine to around 1400 rpm so I can hear over the exhaust I could hear ticking. I pulled off the console over the shifter and hear the ticking loud and clear. Now this leads me to believe it is the plug wire arching against the header. Which would lead to a crappy idle and lost of power if I am not mistaken correct?

      • that makes sense. sounds like a plug wire/arcing issue

        • I rechecked the gap on every plug and set them to .50.

Well I couldn't find a set of AC Delco wires, I went to three stores. I tried taping up the wires still having issues. Its back firing which would make sense that the power isn't getting to the plug to ignite the fuel. Now I know I need a new set of wires what should I get since I can't seem to get my hands on a AC Delco set.

Is there any way I could have installed the opti into the wrong hole. To me that would make it be 120 of timing. (360 / 3 = 120) So could that be a possibly. The car takes a bit to crank like 3 seconds then it will putter and start up.

I also think I felt a back fire in the intake elbow.

          • Unfortunately, coming from experience, it IS possible that the optispark was put on incorrectly but you'd be back firing a lot and it wouldn't run right. IMHO, because you need to get the spark plug wires ANYWAY, I'd replace the wires first.

Agreed. I've witnessed a misaligned opti first person. It back fires like crazy and sounds like someone playing bongos. lol

              • Well I know I have to replace the wires I can't find AC Delco at the parts stores unless I get them ordered is there any other brand of wire I could get, plus the Delco was like 171 dollars I think the screen said. Well mine back fires will idle around 900 till I roll down the driveway then it drops to 650 will come back up while driving there is no power and feels like its missing. I am going to replace the wires and if that doesn't fix it I guess the optispark is coming back off.

                • maybe it was the cheap opti? OEM units all the way with the correct mods done to them and they will live for a long time

                  • Well the guy is a sponsor at LS1tech and everyone says they love their opti from him. If the wires don't fix it and I pull it off and its adjusted correctly I guess I'll order a OEM opti. I hope its not. There goes lots more money.

                    • The problem you're going to have is that you won't be able to tell if the opti was on correctly when you pull it off. Atleast I wasn't able to tell - once I pulled it off, the rotor spun and "reset" itself. I actually put my optispark on with the cover off so that I could hold the rotor inside the optispark so it couldn't spin and that way I was able to put it in exactly where I wanted it.

                      • Ok if you really did drive off jack stands and have tickin noise I suspect you have screwed up o2 sensors or have pulled y pipe off header causing an air leak. Air leak in the headers will cause tickin and when engine warms up o2 will not read correct because your suckin air in by them.
My suggestion is get wires even if you have to order them. Quit throwing parts at it an diagnose problem. Did you pull Opti apart to lock tight screws on rotor? if so, recheck you put it back together correctly. do you have opti vent connected correctly that could give you vacuumn leak!

                            • hmmm that could be the opti installed backwards then. Its hard to tell how bad it is just from reading something

                              • Yeah thats what I am wondering too. I mean after taping the wire the ticking stopped and it was better but still wrong, so for sure I need new wires. Here I'll make a video of the way it sounds and what it does.

The inside view is me basically hitting the gas to floor. Also this is the first start up today so it wasn't a warm start up ice cold.

I thought the problem was when the car was warm but its any time even from a ice cold first start.
I also didn't locktite the Optispark, 2 reasons when I was doing it no body responded and it was getting late so I put it in, I didn't take the cap off so I thought since it came all as one piece it would be ready to go in.

As far as the vents the one just pushed on and the other one had a clip holding it on.
